The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a nationwide appeal urging citizens to actively report unsafe food, unhygienic kitchens, and poor handling practices.
By leveraging the ‘Food Safety Connect’ mobile application, the regulatory body aims to empower consumers to act as its eyes on the ground, ensuring greater accountability from food business operators. This collaborative initiative comes in response to a growing number of consumer complaints regarding contaminated products and sanitation lapses across the country.
Through this tech-driven approach, authorities hope to quickly curb the marketing and consumption of unsafe food while safeguarding public health.
Empowering Consumers Through Technology
To facilitate swift regulatory action, the FSSAI is encouraging people to submit their grievances—complete with photographic evidence—directly through the application.
Emphasising the vital role of public participation, the food regulator shared a direct appeal on X (formerly Twitter): “Don’t just notice it, report it! Unsafe food practices affect everyone. Turn your awareness into action with the Food Safety Connect App.” By simplifying the reporting process, a single uploaded photograph can now trigger an official inspection, making it easier than ever for everyday citizens to hold eateries, modern delivery platforms, and manufacturers accountable for their hygiene standards.
A String of Recent Crackdowns
This renewed push for consumer vigilance follows a series of high-profile regulatory interventions by food safety authorities across India.
Recently, the Food Safety Department ordered the immediate closure of a spice manufacturing unit in Lucknow, seizing adulterated materials for laboratory testing. In another major development, the FSSAI issued nine notices to the rapid-delivery platform Swiggy Instamart over multiple consumer complaints alleging the supply of expired, spoiled, and contaminated food items, including rotten eggs.
Furthermore, Mumbai’s iconic K Rustom ice cream parlour recently faced a licence suspension by the FDA after severe hygiene lapses were discovered during a surprise inspection. These incidents highlight the pressing need for stricter compliance across both traditional and modern food supply chains.
