Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay has emerged as a major disruptor in Tamil Nadu politics after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, became the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections with over 100 seats, though it fell short of a majority.
His rapid political ascent fuelled by a loyal fan base, welfare-driven promises, and grassroots mobilisation has challenged the dominance of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Supporters see his victory as a generational shift, while critics question his governance experience and raise concerns about controversies linked to his films, campaign events, and supporter conduct.
Among notable developments is Vijay’s effort to promote social mobility within politics, including reportedly bringing his driver’s son into the political fold, symbolising a break from entrenched hierarchies. As Tamil Nadu awaits clarity on government formation, Vijay’s next steps will shape both his leadership and the state’s political future.
From Mass Hero to Political Leader
Vijay’s political rise represents one of the most striking transformations in contemporary Indian politics. For over three decades, he cultivated an image as a “mass hero” in Tamil cinema, starring in commercially successful films that resonated with audiences across class and regional lines.

When he announced his entry in 2024 and launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), many observers were initially sceptical, viewing it as another celebrity experiment. Central to this success was his ability to mobilise his extensive fan club network originally formed for film promotions into a disciplined grassroots machinery. These networks evolved into booth-level campaign units, ensuring voter outreach even in remote constituencies.
This strategy enabled TVK to establish a presence across Tamil Nadu at a pace rarely seen for a new party. In the 2026 Assembly elections, the results were emphatic: TVK emerged as the single largest party, crossing the 100-seat mark and significantly weakening the electoral hold of both the DMK and AIADMK.
Political commentators have described this outcome as a “political earthquake” in a state long dominated by Dravidian parties. Vijay’s campaign blended populist welfare promises with aspirational messaging. His manifesto reportedly focused on employment generation, particularly for youth, financial assistance for women, agricultural reforms, and transparency in governance.
By invoking the legacies of leaders such as M. G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa, and M. Karunanidhi, Vijay positioned himself within Tamil Nadu’s established political tradition while promising a break from what he framed as stagnation and political fatigue.
Yet, despite this strong mandate, TVK’s inability to secure a clear majority has created a complex post-election scenario. The reluctance of rival parties to immediately align with Vijay reflects both political caution and ideological rivalry. As negotiations continue, the question remains whether Vijay can transition from electoral success to stable governance an area where critics argue experience matters more than popularity.

Over the years, some of his films have been criticised for depicting smoking, alcohol consumption, and violence in ways that activists argue could influence younger audiences.
More recently, debates have emerged around the portrayal of certain communities in his films, particularly in the context of Beast and the unreleased Jana Nayagan. Critics, including sections of civil society, have raised concerns about stereotyping and representation, arguing that such portrayals carry social consequences especially when associated with a figure who now holds political influence.
The leak of Jana Nayagan prior to its official release added another layer of controversy, sparking discussions not only about piracy but also about the film’s content and messaging. At the same time, a tragic incident at a political rally in Karur in 2025, where a crowd crush led to the deaths of 41 people, cast a shadow over Vijay’s campaign.
His response expressing condolences and announcing compensation was acknowledged by supporters, but the incident also highlighted the challenges of managing large-scale public mobilisation responsibly. Further criticism has arisen from incidents involving supporters, such as raising political slogans in a religious setting, which drew backlash for blurring the lines between politics and places of worship.
These episodes have been used by opponents to question the discipline and ideological clarity of the party, while also underscoring the broader challenge of maintaining control over a rapidly expanding support base. In parallel, Vijay’s personal life has remained under intense public scrutiny. Reports of divorce proceedings and allegations involving his private relationships have attracted widespread media attention.
