Sujata Ramchandra Madke, hailing from a farming family in Shirgaon, Thane district, Maharashtra, has achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first woman from her region to join the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as a scientist.
Madke, who balanced her duties as an RTO inspector with rigorous nightly study sessions, joined ISRO’s Bengaluru centre on May 27, 2025. Overcoming both financial constraints and societal expectations, she serves as an inspiring symbol of determination for aspiring youth, particularly women, throughout India.
From Zilla Parishad School to ISRO Labs: A Story of Academic Excellence
Born and raised in the remote village of Shirgaon, approximately 15 kilometres from Shahapur, Sujata Madke’s educational journey began at the local Zilla Parishad school.
Despite her family’s limited financial resources—her father is a farmer—she demonstrated exceptional academic abilities, which propelled her to pursue a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, Lonere.
Her thirst for knowledge led her to IIT Kharagpur, where she gained valuable experience before ultimately serving as a Motor Vehicle Inspector with the Maharashtra RTO.
Defying Gravity and Societal Expectations Through Unwavering Dedication
While fulfilling her responsibilities at the RTO, Madke relentlessly prepared for ISRO’s highly competitive selection process during the night, often sacrificing sleep and personal time. Her path was paved with resilience and sacrifice, with her family’s steadfast support playing a pivotal role in her success.
“Like many girls from agrarian backgrounds, pursuing higher education in science was not straightforward, but Sujata’s unwavering determination truly set her apart,” commented a local educator. Following a rigorous evaluation, Madke was selected as a Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ (Mechanical) at ISRO, a feat that is inspiring young women from similar backgrounds to pursue STEM careers.
In a recent interview with the Thane Mirror, Sujata expressed her gratitude to her family, teachers, and mentors, emphasizing their unwavering support as crucial to her success.
