The government says the RON 95 requirement is specified in Bureau of Indian Standards norms to safeguard vehicles and maintain fuel quality.

The E20 rollout is part of a multi‑year biofuel strategy that began as early as 2018, when the government first introduced ethanol blending targets in petrol to lessen dependence on fossil fuels and improve air quality. Automobile associations and standards bodies have suggested that ongoing dialogue among regulators, manufacturers and motorists will be essential to address teething issues and sustain confidence in the transition.

Encouraging thoughtful dialogue among policymakers, scientists, industry participants and everyday drivers will strengthen trust and ensure that the benefits of E20 are widely understood and equitably shared.
