France has passed a new law which will significantly reduce the level of pollution in the country. They are going to be the first country to put a complete ban on the use of plastic cups, plates and cutlery. The law will come into effect in 2020 in a bid to tackle the rapid climate change.
The law will ensure that disposable dishes sold in France are made of biologically sourced materials that can be composted.
The new laws are part of the Energy Transition for Green Growth plan which comes into effect in 2020.
The new law follows a country-wide ban on plastic bags which went into effect in July of this year.
According to The Associated Press, ecologists wanted the ban to take effect as early as 2017, but it was postponed due to criticism that said the measure was “anti-social” and hurt families that struggle financially and use disposable tableware frequently.
The move has been widely supported by green activists, however, others argue that it has violated European Union rules on free movement of goods.
