A celebratory journey turned into a tragedy late Tuesday night when a bus carrying approximately 40 devotees overturned near Himmatpura village in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib. Returning from Baisakhi prayers at Sri Anandpur Sahib, the vehicle reportedly developed a mechanical snag, causing it to strike an electric pole and flip.
The accident has left at least eight people dead including two brothers and over 20 others injured. Local villagers and police coordinated a swift rescue, while critically wounded passengers have been moved to PGIMER Chandigarh for advanced care.
Technical Failure Leads To Fatal Crash
The accident occurred around 10:00 PM on the Morinda-Chunni road, just 1.5 kilometres away from the devotees’ home destination of Main Majri village. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shubham Aggarwal stated that prima facie evidence suggests a mechanical fault, possibly a broken axle, caused the driver to lose control.
“The accident occurred just as the pilgrims were almost home,” the SSP noted, adding that while the vehicle was carrying nearly 40 passengers, investigations into potential overloading are ongoing. Survivors recounted a harrowing moment of panic as the bus, after hitting the pole, reportedly became electrically charged, complicating initial rescue efforts.
A Community In Mourning
The victims, all residents of Main Majri, were part of a close-knit group that had travelled to the historic Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib to mark the Khalsa Sajna Diwas. This tragedy follows a similar recent incident involving pilgrims, sparking renewed concerns over the roadworthiness of private transport used for religious gatherings.
Political leaders, including Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed their grief. “The state government stands firmly with the victims’ families in this hour of sorrow,” the CM remarked, as local authorities wait for forensic and mechanical reports before filing a formal criminal case.
