In a twisted turn of events, Devendra Fadnavis announced his resignation from the post of Chief Minister in Maharashtra hours after Ajit Pawar withdrew support from the ruling BJP alliance.

“We don’t have a majority after Ajit Pawar’s resignation as deputy CM. After this press conference, will go to the governor and submit my resignation. My best wishes to the government to be formed,” Fadnavis said.

Ajit Pawar resigned as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra just three days after swearing-in. The resignation comes a few hours after the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered that floor test be conducted in the Maharashtra assembly on Wednesday, November 27.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis was supposed to prove his majority in Maharashtra assembly. However, in a show of strength over 160 MLAs from the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party, and the Congress MLAs pledged their allegiance to there respective parties on Monday. The MLAs support meant that Fadnavis would not be able to prove majority.

Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar also got a clean chit in nine out of the 3000 cases pertaining to irrigation projects during his tenure as the minster, on November 25.

On Saturday, November 23, President’s rule was revoked at 5.47 am and Bhartiya Janata Party’s Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the chief minister while NCP’s Ajit Pawar as the deputy chief minister of the state.

The BJP in defence of CM Fadnavis claimed that the CM has the support of 170 MLAs (including independent MLAs) and that how they convinced Governor to allow government formation in the state.

The overnight alliance of BJP-NCP emerged after the coalition talks between NCP, Congress, and Shiv Sena came to the final stage on Friday evening. Keeping aside their political ideologies it was decided that Sena chief Uddhav Thakeray will serve as the chief minister of the state for five years.

The Supreme Court on Monday asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to present Maharastra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s letter recommending the revocation of the President’s rule before the court.

The SC on Monday reserved its order till 10:30 am on Tuesday while hearing a plea filed by Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party- Congress challenging Governor’s decision to swear in Fadnavis as the Chief Minister.
