Social media works in such a way that all it takes is a live video on Facebook or a forwarded message on WhatsApp for one to reach the highest realms of fame. However, through social media another campaign is running to manipulate public opinion through false or misleading posts.

This has become a standard political practice across our country, with political operatives and supporters shaping the flow of information.

This is why there is a need to question or verify news reports on social media before putting it out.

In May 2014, the Narendra Modi government came to power with a historic mandate and the promise of a better economic situation. After three years, did Modi deliver on those promises?

In a recently circulated social media post, which draws comparison between the Modi and the Manmohan government, we find that the data has been tampered with.

Internet Connectivity in Gram Panchayats

One of the images claimed that since Independence till 2014, only 59 gram-panchayats have been given internet connection, while in 2016-17, under Modi’s government 90,996 gram panchayats have been given internet connection.

It is indeed correct that till 2014 only 59 gram panchayats received internet connection but the figures of connection given out during Modi’s tenure is not correct. In the three years that Modi has been in power 78,220 gram panchayats received internet connection.

It needs to be noted that the figures in the picture that has been circulated, claims that the Modi government did so in one year, whereas the actual figure says otherwise.

National Highways

Another picture claims that in 2013-14, under Manmohan Singh’s leadership, 3,620 kms of national highway was constructed, while under Narendra Modi’s leadership in 2016-17, 15,948 kms of national highway has been constructed.

After visiting the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation website, it can found that during 2013-14, 4,620 kms of national highways have been constructed and during 2016-17 8,231 kms of national highways have been made. So, the picture exaggerates while talking about Narendra Modi.

LPG connections

Regarding LPG connections, a picture claims that from 2004-2014, in ten years, the Manmohan Singh government gave out 5.31 crore LPG connections and Narendra Modi government in one year, 2016-17, gave 6.91 crore connections.

The truth however is that in the ten years 8.9 crore LPG connections were distributed and in the one year, 6.83 crore gas connections were given out. Hence, the picture twisted the fact.

The Logical Indian Take

Creating or sharing fake news is never justified. We have a responsibility to verify everything that we post on the internet. To ensure that our national debate is healthy and well-informed, each and every one of us has a responsibility of treating what we read with a pinch of salt, a spoonful of doubt, and a flood of research.
