On November 18, Station house officer (SHO) Sundaram Sharma from Uttarakhand’s Tehri allegedly thrashed an architect Krishan Kuriyal. The incident took place on Sunday when Krishan was near a polling booth at Kendriya Vidyalaya in New Tehri area to observe the polling trend as his sister, Sushma Uniyal is an independent candidate for the local body elections that took place in Uttrakhand recently. The Kuriyal family claims that Krishan was thrashed by the cop and was later implicated into false charges. However, the police have denied all the allegations and have asserted that the Kuriyal first started to misbehave with the officer which led to his arrest. He was granted bail later on.
The eyewitness told The Logical Indian that Kuriyal was near the polling booth when Tehri SHO Sundaram Sharma who was the inspecting officer in the area approached Kuriyal and started to inquire about his identity. Reportedly, by the time Kuriyal could answer him the cop slapped him and dragged him to his jeep. The family further claimed that the cop misbehaved with Krishan. Though Krishan was resisting, the cop forcefully made him sit into the police van and took him to the police station.
One of the relatives of Krishan, while speaking to The Logical Indian said, “Tehri Police detained him (Krishan) for no reason, as he may have hurt SHOs ego by answering him, the police used the force to take an unarmed man to the police station, where he was beaten mercilessly. Kuriyal has been selflessly working to reshape the temples in hills of Garhwal without taking any fee. PM Modi ambitious Kedarnath shrine, and Dhari Devi temple near Rudraprayag are few of the important projects he is working for.”
Later an FIR was registered against Kuriyal under Indian Penal Code sections 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 503 (Criminal intimidation), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions),188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 189 (Threat of injury to public servant).
What does the Police say?
The Logical Indian spoke to the SHO Sundaram Sharma, who denied all the allegations of assault at the architect. He told us, “While I was near the polling booth and was inspecting the place, Krishan Kuriyal was standing in the middle of a lane. When I asked him to move, he looked at my nameplate and said, ‘who is Sundaram Sharma?” The officer further said that the accused started to misbehave with him and told him that he (Krishan) would take care of the cop once the elections results are out.
“I was still trying to make him understand when, Krishan Kuriyal suddenly attacked me, soon the local people around me and the other cops who had accompanied me stop him. He was not cooperating with us so we had to take him to the police station as what he did is an offence in terms of the law,” said the officer.
The Logical Indian also spoke to (ADG) Law and Order, Ashok Kumar about the issue, he said, “We are looking at both the sides, we will investigate into both sides of the incident and culprits won’t be spared.”
Tehri SHO is infamous
This is reportedly not the first time that the Tehri SHO, Sundaram Sharma is surrounded in such controversy. In the past, there was a complaint about the SHO’s misbehaviour with the journalists.
According to Parvatjan, Tehri Press Club president Govind Bisht has written to the district magistrate and urged him for a meeting to hear out the reporters complaints. Almost, 19 reporters have written a plea to the district magistrate in regard to the complaint of the SHO.
Speaking to The Logical Indian, Ex Dist President of Bar Association of Tehri, Devendra Domoga said that the Bar association was on one day strike to protest the police actions against Krishan Kuriyal, he added that we won’t tolerate Goondaism in the name of policing.
Who is Krishan Kuriyal?
Speaking to The Logical Indian, Colonel Ajay Kothiyal (Retd), who led the reconstruction project of Kedarnath and is now looking after Prime Minister Modi’s Ambitious Shankracharya’s Samadhi, said that Krishan Kuriyal is no lesser than unsung heroes of Uttarakhand. Kothiyal further said that Kishan has been a philanthropist ever since he completed his studies. “Kuriyal has been an inspiration for people who talk about the development of state at the grassroots level, how can he be called framed in severe charges, when he is so humble and have never misbehaved with anyone,” he said.
Kothiyal quashed the charges of a scuffle with the police by saying, “Krishan has been diagnosed with blocked arteries last year. He cannot resort to physical aggression.”
Kuriyal’s sister, Sushma Uniyal also told The Logical Indian that she has written an application to the electoral officer for registering an FIR against Sharma for hauling her supporters and thrashing her brother.
