Yesterday headlines were filled with news that Arvind Kejriwal’s electricity bill is Rs. 91,000 for 2 months. Later on evening, it came into light that PM Narendra Modi’s electricity bill is Rs. 21 lac and finance minister Arun Jaitley electricity bill is Rs. 4 lac.
We thank the mainstream media for highlighting this crucial issue and taking necessary steps aiming to make politicians accountable. But, at the same time, we request them to go beyond making headlines and provide us with in-depth knowledge of where this electricity is being utilised. Later last evening, it came to light that monthly electricity expenditure of the residence of Hon’ble Chief Minister, Delhi is to the tune of approx. Rs.15,000/- per month and rest bill were for official purposes. Same might be the case with Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley.
We are not saying that politicians don’t overutilize electricity. There are numerous cases where politicians have high electricity bills on them racking upto lakhs and crores instead of the fact that they are provided with huge subsidies. For example, Ex-CM Delhi Shiela Dixit had 31 ACs, 15 coolers, 25 heaters, 12 geysers on her office and Maharashtra State owes BEST Rs 70 lakh for power bills of just 10 bungalows occupied by top leaders, including CM, finance minister, revenue minister and the Assembly speaker. However, we also need to find out what resulted in such extravagant electricity expenses, and take necessary actions if we find that public resources are being exploited for personal gains or carelessness, instead of official purposes.
