Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is a system of alternate schools which are run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. It admits some of the brightest minds of the country and runs classes from VI to XII. Navodaya Vidyalaya also boasts of achieving highest pass percentages year after year for classes X and XII.

It is to be noted that these schools follow the CBSE board. For admission into these schools, the students have to take an entrance exam and meritorious students are then granted admission. The fees is nil or nominal for students from below poverty line families.

While the teaching system and performance of students from these schools are highly appreciated, the same cannot be said for the conduct of the entrance exam. Notably, other CBSE board following schools generally start the session from April end. However, the entrance exam itself for admission into class VI in Navodaya schools are held in April. By the time the result is announced, it is already June.

However, the results for this year were announced by July end, almost two months later than the expected date. There are few regions for which the results have not been announced even by now. Until last year, results of all the regions was announced on the same date, however, this year results for different regions were announced on different dates.

It is quite evident that in such cases parents and children both are bound to get anxious. Frantic calls made on the helpline numbers went unanswered. On fewa occasions when the helpline numbers were answered, parents got a generic reply, “results will be available shortly”. There are three websites of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, however, all the three websites were down for most of the times.

navodaya results delayed

Website down, what can the students do?

The Logical Indian spoke to a parent, Sunita*, from Haridwar, whose daughter recently cleared the exam, she said, “We got to know about the result on July 24. This time there has been a lot of delay. We were in dilemma, whether to admit her to other school or wait for the results.” She also added that while result in her region was announced on July 24, the result in other regions like Pune was announced on July 18 itself.

While Sunita’s daughter could clear the exam and now would be joining the classes from August, Esha* and her family from Kolkata are in a fix. Esha’s father said, “Esha could not clear the exam. We got to know about the result on July 26. If we wish to let her continue in her previous school which follows West Bengal board, that would not be possible as the new academic session has already started in January and will end by December. Last option are CBSE board following schools, however, we are not sure if they will admit students at this time of the academic session. It is quite possible that her one year would be wasted.”

Most of the aspirants like Esha did not get themselves enrolled in other schools, hoping that they would get admission in Navodaya Vidyalaya. Most of the other schools accept admission till June as well, so there was a cushion period, if not Navodaya Vidyalaya, parents could still get their wards admitted to other schools. However, the delay of about two months has created havoc. Schools close admission by this time.

There are some regions where the results have not been announced yet. “My brother took the test in April. While result for four of the six districts of Tripura has been announced, two districts still await results. My district Belonia in South Tripura is one of those two districts”, says Pradip*.

The Logical Indian take

It is to be noted that most of the students taking this exam come from BPL families, who aspire to receive education at par with other private schools at a very nominal rate. Some regions have about 4,000-5,000 students competing for 80 seats. Such mismanagement when dealing with thousands of students is not expected. We hope that the concerned authorities take note of it and release results for remaining regions and make sure that such incidents do not happen in future.
