The 88th Academy Awards was much known for Di Caprio’s first Oscar but in between the glitz and glamour, there were Indian’s and Pakistani’s artists who were awarded for their expertise in the most coveted platform in the world. Let us look at all of them.
The film, A Girl in the River – The Price of Forgiveness, highlights the issue of honour killings in Pakistan. Notably, this is Sharmeen’s second Oscar besides she has won Pakistan’s second highest civilian award after her first Oscar award. Sharmeen is also an Emmy award winner. Sharmeen Chinoy was born in Karachi in 1978. She did her early schooling at the prestigious Karachi Grammar School and later studied mass communications at Stanford University in the US.
Saajan Skaria was part of the team behind ‘Inside Out’, named the Best Animated Feature Film at the 88th Academy Awards. Skaria works for Pixar Animation Studios and was also the character supervisor in the American 3D adventure film. Cartoons were Skaria’s childhood obsession. He was an engineer of Siemens after his graduation, where his German boss saw he could draw, he said: “Good work, you shouldn’t waste your time as an engineer.” From then on he never looked back and his family also supported him fully in charting his change in career path.
Asif Kapadia is a British filmmaker of Indian origin. Asif Kapadia’s “Amy” was named the Best Documentary Feature at the 88th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. “Amy” is based on the life of late singer Amy Winehouse. Asif is also a recipient of BAFTA awards. It is worthwhile noting that Asif has previously worked with Irrfan Khan and Nawazudin Siddiqui. Some of his earlier works include The Sheep Thief (1997), The Warrior (2001), The Return (2006) and Far North (2007)
