Disposal of garbage is one of the major woes around the world. With each passing days the problem seems to be growing more and more. A California-based company is trying to make a big difference. They have invented world’s first plantable coffee cup studded with native seeds. The project known as ‘Reduce Reuse Grow’ has been able to raise over $11,000. The cups — founded by Alex Henige, a senior at California Polytechnic State University — will be able to germinate into plants once the consumer finish drinking coffee and bury it under soil.
Cups to trees
These cups would be studded with seeds of flowers like California poppy, desert bluebell and blazing star. A survey carried out by Carry Your Cup found out that Americans consume around 400 million cups every day, which adds up to 146 billion cups every year.
Coffee with a green touch
Seeing the Americans’ love for coffee, it can be predicted that this project will be a big hit in the future. Henige has also plans for those lazy caffeine lovers, who won’t take the trouble of planting the cups. There will be special Reduce Reuse Grow bins where they can drop their cups that will be picked up for planting.
Coffee cup will mean a lot more from now
One coffee cup can biodegrade within 180 days and transform into native flower or a tree. One cup will produce at least one tree, which will again be able to extract one ton of Carbon dioxide over a period of 40 years. These cups can be planted in gardens, fields, anywhere one considers it to be fit. Henige has been approached by major coffee chains for making coffee cups for them. He hopes to see one day that these cups are being used all over the world.
The Logical Indian welcomes the innovative concept of growing vegetation through decomposed coffee cups. Given the environmental challenge we are facing as a race, such initiatives and innovations are much needed.
