Recycling Rubbish Into Compost And Electricity, Mysuru Sets The Model For Other Cities

Inspired by the Swacch Bharat campaign, the city of Mysuru is in full swing to recycle garbage into compost and electricity. The city has now nine recycling centres, and a compost plant in Mysuru, reports Livemint.

How does it work?

Workers in olive green aprons go around the city every day at 6.30 am. They collect waste from the residents as compostable and non-combustible in two bins. After composting the non-reusable garbages, the compost is sold to farmers. The reusable waste is segregated. They collect a waste management levy from the residents along with a property tax. The local government runs the system in association with NGOs with the cooperation of the citizens.

“Waste is not a problem if it is converted into money,” said D. Madegowda, 75, who is employed at the recycling plant. The local government publicises the campaign through WhatsApp messages, radio jingles, street plays and pamphlets. Government employees conduct awareness programme among the residents. Among 402 tonnes of waste produces every day, the city process close to a quarter of it, reports Livemint.

At a time when Indian cities produce millions of tons of garbage every year that are left untreated, Mysuru sets an example with efficient waste management.
