Hotels in Madurai has launched a green initiative to go eco-friendly by composting waste and cultivating vegetables using manure. This initiative has launched in collaboration with Madurai City Corporation and one of the first such initiatives in the country. The organisers have started the initiative after deriving inspiration from the clean India drive.

The project is named as ‘Smart, Clean, Green, Madurai’ and it was established at a cost of Rs 55 lakh. The wastes will be collected by a high tech accelerated composting machine and it will be done on a daily basis. “The hotels have to pay Rs 6,000 a day for waste management. They get organic vegetables. This is a negligible amount,’’ said Thirupathi managing director KT Greens to The Times of India.

Initially, only three hotels in the city came forward to handover their waste to the initiative. The compost and recycling yard was set up in the 2.5 acre land off the Madurai-Melur highway on the outskirts of the city behind the Madurai bench of the Madras high court. The results in the pilot project led to 30 major hotels coming forward to join the project, and the Madurai Corporation came forward to offer land to the company and the Madurai District Hotel Owners Association agreed to go ahead with their project,” Thirupathi said.

According to the report by The Times of India, the workers will collect vegetable waste after removing the plastic waste and it will be shredded and sent to the composting yard. The manure will be obtained every 21 days. From 100 kg waste, 15 kg to 18 kg waste will be produced. This manure will be sold and will be used to produce different types of organic vegetables and fruits.

KL Kumar, President of Madurai District Hotel Owners Association president KL Kumar said that it was one of best projects they were participating in. He also urged the Madurai corporation authorities to reconsider the garbage collection fee. “We are processing our own waste, and none of us generates even 100 tonnes of garbage individually, so the benchmark of three tonnes per day is too high for hotels in Madurai,’’ he added.
