Suchiter Sharma, a 22-year-old from Salehar village near Bishnah in Jammu district, has emerged as one of the youngest IRS officers by securing an All India Rank (AIR) 146 in the 2021 UPSC Civil Services Examination on his very first attempt.
Despite daunting challenges—including daily commutes of over 50 km to attend college and coaching classes, and enduring months of internet shutdown during the COVID-19 lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir—Suchiter’s unwavering dedication and adaptability propelled him to this remarkable achievement.
His journey has been widely praised by UPSC officials and educators as a shining example of perseverance, discipline, and resilience in the face of adversity.
A Journey Marked by Determination and Sacrifice
Born and brought up in the small village of Salehar, Suchiter’s educational journey began at the Army Public School in Ratnuchak, Jammu, followed by graduation from Government Gandhi Memorial Science College. His daily routine was gruelling: waking early to catch buses that covered more than 50 kilometres to reach his college, attending classes, rushing to coaching centres, and then returning home to study late into the night.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges when Jammu and Kashmir faced prolonged internet shutdowns, cutting off access to online study materials and virtual coaching sessions. Rather than being deterred, Suchiter adapted by relying on offline resources, books, and self-study. His parents, both educators, and his cousin, an IAS officer, provided constant motivation and emotional support throughout his preparation.
Overcoming Pandemic-Era Challenges in a Remote Region
Suchiter’s success is particularly noteworthy given the context of the pandemic and the region’s infrastructural limitations. The internet shutdown in Jammu and Kashmir lasted for several months, severely impacting students and aspirants who depended on digital learning platforms. Many UPSC candidates from the region struggled to maintain their preparation momentum, with some forced to pause or abandon their dreams.
Suchiter’s ability to persevere despite these hurdles highlights not only his personal grit but also the broader challenges faced by aspirants from remote and conflict-affected areas. His achievement underscores the urgent need for improved digital infrastructure, uninterrupted internet access, and accessible coaching facilities to ensure equal opportunities for all aspirants, regardless of their geographic location.

His story challenges the notion that perfect conditions are necessary for extraordinary success and encourages us to recognise and nurture talent from all corners of the country.
