Two men, including the victim’s former partner, have been arrested for the brutal murder of 38-year-old Babli Devi, a resident of East Delhi. Her decapitated body was discovered on 15 March near a canal in the Narsena area of Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.
Investigations revealed that the prime accused, Vikas Kumar, allegedly lured her to his village before killing her with the help of accomplices to “hide her identity” following a breakdown in their relationship. The police achieved a breakthrough after the victim’s family identified her via social media posts shared by the authorities.
A Deceptive Trap and a Gruesome Discovery
According to Bulandshahr SP (City) Shanker Prasad, the victim had been in a live-in relationship with Vikas for three years following the death of her husband. However, tensions rose after Vikas married another woman in December 2025. On the day of the incident, Vikas allegedly lured Babli to Bulandshahr on his motorcycle under false pretences.
“All of them met in a forested stretch, grabbed Babli by her limbs, decapitated her with a sharp weapon, and threw her head about 500m away,” the SP stated. To further mislead the authorities, Vikas even lodged a “missing person” complaint after the murder.
Social Media Aids a Difficult Identification
The case initially left investigators with few clues, as the victim’s torso was found in a decomposed state in Ghunghrawali village. After conducting her last rites on 18 March, the police turned to digital outreach, posting photographs of the victim’s belongings and identifying marks online. On 22 March, Babli’s mother and daughter noticed the posts and approached the police.
This identification allowed the police to use surveillance and technical intelligence to track Vikas to Muradnagar and his accomplice, Aman, to Bulandshahr. A third suspect remains at large as the investigation continues under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This horrifying incident is a somber reminder of how fragile safety can be when personal disputes escalate into senseless violence. At The Logical Indian, we believe that every individual deserves a life of dignity and security, free from the shadow of betrayal and brutality.
While the police’s swift action in using social media for identification is commendable, the frequency of such gender-based violence reflects a deeper systemic need for empathy and conflict resolution in our society. We must foster a culture where dialogue replaces violence and where the sanctity of life is held above all else.
Justice for Babli Devi must not only mean the conviction of the guilty but also a collective vow to protect the vulnerable in our communities.
