A 22-year-old woman from Delhi has alleged that a taxi driver attempted to sexually assault her while she was travelling from Haldwani to Nainital late on Thursday night. Police said the woman managed to escape the vehicle after the driver allegedly tried to molest and assault her, forcing her to hide in a nearby forest throughout the night to evade him.

The incident reportedly occurred near Patwadangar, around 12 kilometres from Nainital. On Friday morning, a local resident helped her reach the police station, after which a case was registered and a medical examination conducted. Police officials said efforts are underway to identify and arrest the accused driver and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Woman Escapes Vehicle After Driver Allegedly Turns Violent

According to police officials, the woman had hired a taxi from Haldwani to Nainital around midnight and was travelling alone when the incident occurred. During the journey, the driver allegedly began behaving inappropriately and attempted to molest and sexually assault her inside the vehicle. Officials said the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and later diverted the taxi from the main highway onto a secluded road near Patwadangar.

Sensing the threat to her safety, the woman reportedly resisted the alleged assault and managed to escape from the vehicle. She ran towards a nearby forested stretch and raised an alarm, prompting the driver to flee the scene. Fearing the driver might return and unsure of her surroundings in the dark, the woman stayed hidden in the forested area near the roadside throughout the night.

Police Register Case, Launch Search For Accused

The following morning, a local resident reportedly noticed the woman and helped her reach the Tallital police station in Nainital, where she narrated the incident to officers. Police subsequently registered a case based on her complaint and sent her for a medical examination at BD Pandey Hospital as part of the investigation.Police officials said teams have been deployed to identify the taxi driver and track him down.

Authorities are also examining the route taken by the vehicle and collecting evidence from the area where the incident allegedly took place. Statements are being recorded and further legal action will follow once the accused is located and questioned. The case has once again raised concerns about safety during late-night travel, particularly for women travelling alone to tourist destinations or across cities.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This incident highlights the persistent concerns around women’s safety during travel, especially when journeys take place late at night or in isolated areas. While the survivor’s courage and quick thinking helped her escape a potentially dangerous situation, such experiences underline the urgent need for stronger safeguards in the transport sector.

Improved driver verification systems, better monitoring of commercial vehicles, and accessible emergency support mechanisms can play a key role in preventing such incidents. Equally important is ensuring that survivors feel supported when they report crimes and that authorities act swiftly to ensure accountability.Creating safer public spaces and travel systems requires collective responsibility, from law enforcement and transport operators to communities that prioritise vigilance and empathy.
