A car explosion near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi’s old city has left at least eight people dead and several others injured on Monday evening, prompting authorities to place the national capital on high alert.
Delhi Police and fire-services teams rushed to the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched an investigation into the cause. Multiple nearby vehicles also caught fire, and security has been reinforced across Delhi and neighbouring states.
Scene of Devastation and Initial Response
The blast occurred around 6:30 p.m. when a parked car suddenly detonated near the metro station in the heart of Delhi’s historic district. Once the explosion occurred, at least three to four additional vehicles were engulfed in flames, and seven fire tenders were deployed to bring the blaze under control within an hour.
A spokesperson for the Delhi Police, Sanjay Tyagi, confirmed the death toll and said, “We are investigating the cause of the blast.” Hospitals in the area, including the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital, received multiple casualties, with at least eight brought in dead and others in serious condition.
