A 35-year-old man named Aman strangled his wife Rajni to death in Najafgarh, southwest Delhi, over repeated conflicts regarding her social media activity, specifically her making reels on Instagram where she had around 6,000 followers. Following the murder, Aman attempted suicide by hanging himself and ingesting poison but was rescued and admitted to hospital under police custody.
The couple, originally from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, lived in rented accommodation with their two young sons. The police have registered a murder case and are intensively investigating the matter, including seizing mobile phones and recording statements from relatives and neighbours.
Clash Over Social Media Creativity Leads to Tragedy
Rajni, a homemaker who identified as a social media artist, often created and shared short videos and reels on platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp. Aman, who drives an e-rickshaw, disapproved of her online activities and frequently argued with her over the issue for over a year.
According to neighbours and the landlord, the couple’s quarrels escalated into physical altercations. On the night of the incident, after a bitter argument, Aman strangled Rajni while she was asleep. In distress, he attempted to kill himself by hanging from a ceiling fan and by consuming poison, but the ceiling fan’s rod broke, and neighbours alerted the police in time to save him.
Background of Domestic Strife and Police Investigation
The couple, both permanent residents of Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, had been living in Najafgarh since April 2025 with their sons aged five and nine. It is reported that Rajni was previously married to Aman’s elder brother, who had died by suicide. Police officials highlighted that domestic abuse had surfaced during preliminary inquiries, including instances where Aman physically assaulted Rajni due to her social media presence. The post-mortem examination of Rajni’s body was conducted at Rao Tula Ram Memorial Hospital.
According to an article by NDTV, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh confirmed that the accused is undergoing medical treatment and that the murder case is actively being investigated with more statements being recorded to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
According to recent statistics, nearly one in every three Indian women experience domestic violence, underscoring the urgent need for awareness, education, and intervention to curb this pervasive social evil.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This deeply tragic incident emphasizes the urgent need for empathy, respectful communication, and tolerance within families navigating the complexities of modern technology and social media platforms. The Logical Indian believes that fostering dialogue, understanding, and mutual respect is crucial to prevent uprisings of violence in domestic environments.
Women’s freedom to express themselves in digital spaces should be supported and protected, not met with suspicion or aggression. Rather than reacting with violence, families and communities should strive to discuss differences constructively, bridging generational and cultural divides with kindness.
This story raises vital questions about changing social dynamics entwined with digital media usage, underlying the need for positive social change through empathy and dialogue.
