The Delhi government has launched an ambitious welfare initiative called the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana to secure the educational future of girls in the national capital. Announced as a replacement for the earlier Ladli Scheme, the programme will provide structured financial assistance of ₹56,000 in instalments from birth until the completion of graduation.
Upon successfully finishing higher education, the accumulated amount is expected to mature to more than ₹1 lakh, offering young women a strong financial start in adult life. The scheme is aimed at families with limited income and is designed to reduce dropout rates among girls, encourage long-term education, and promote gender equality.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described it as a major step toward empowering daughters through education and economic security. The benefits will be available to up to two girls per family and will be transferred directly to bank accounts through a transparent digital process.
A Comprehensive Push for Girls’ Empowerment
The Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana represents a significant policy intervention aimed at transforming how families in Delhi support their daughters’ education. Under the scheme, financial assistance will be disbursed at different educational milestones such as school admission, progression to higher classes, and eventually college or university completion.
By linking payments to these stages, the government hopes to create a strong incentive for parents to prioritise education for girls instead of withdrawing them early due to financial pressures. Officials have clarified that the scheme will be applicable to families residing in Delhi for at least three years with an annual income below the prescribed limit, ensuring that the benefits reach economically weaker sections.
Announcing the initiative, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that no girl in Delhi should be forced to abandon her studies because of poverty. She emphasised that investing in daughters is equivalent to investing in the future of the entire city. The government has also promised a streamlined online application process and Aadhaar-linked direct benefit transfers to minimise delays and corruption.
Education experts have welcomed the scheme, pointing out that financial uncertainty is one of the main reasons girls drop out after secondary school. They believe that guaranteed support till graduation could help thousands of young women dream bigger and plan long-term careers.
Learning From the Past, Building for the Future
The newly introduced programme replaces the Ladli Scheme, which was launched in 2008 with similar objectives but faced several implementation challenges over the years. While the earlier scheme succeeded in reaching many beneficiaries, a large number of accounts reportedly remained unclaimed or stuck in bureaucratic processes.
Government data revealed that nearly two lakh eligible girls had not received their maturity benefits on time, largely due to outdated procedures and poor awareness among families. The Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana has been designed to address these gaps by adopting a fully digital and transparent framework. The Delhi administration has also committed to clearing pending dues of Ladli beneficiaries alongside rolling out the new initiative from April 2026.
Policymakers believe that the upgraded scheme offers a more practical and long-term solution by extending support beyond school education to graduation and professional courses anywhere in India. Social workers have pointed out that such continuity is crucial because many girls manage to finish school but are unable to afford college fees, coaching, or hostel expenses.
By ensuring financial backing throughout the entire educational journey, the government aims to create a generation of confident, independent, and financially secure women. Analysts view the scheme as part of a broader shift toward targeted welfare measures that focus on human development rather than short-term relief.
