The Delhi Assembly on December 2 unanimously passed the ‘Delhi Sports University’ bill, with a voice vote.

The Delhi Chief Minister – Arvind Kejriwal said the sports university will help in receiving more medals than China in the Olympics. Kejriwal said that political leaders and bureaucrats will not have any function in running the university and will run by the professionals instead.

The university will offer graduation, post-graduation and doctorate degrees in cricket, football, and hockey among other sports. The Delhi youth will be given priority in admissions to the proposed university.

Kejriwal underlined that in the last 70 years, India has only won 28 medals in Olympics. He further drew a comparison with China in terms of the gold medal hauled and said that India has no dearth of talent.

“This Bill will realise the dream of every youth and sportsperson in the country of winning more gold than China. I am sure this dream will be realised in my lifetime. I will not go anywhere unless India wins more gold than China,” Kejriwal said in his address in the House.

Ninety acres of land have been identified for construction of the university in Mundka and an experienced sportsperson will be selected as the university Vice-Chancellor.
