A horrific double murder has shaken Delhi’s Rohini locality, where a man allegedly killed his wife and mother-in-law with scissors following a domestic dispute over birthday gifts. The victims, identified as Priya Sehgal (34) and her mother Kusum Sinha (63), were found dead in their home on KN Katju Marg.
The accused, Yogesh Sehgal, who was reportedly unemployed at the time, was arrested after fleeing with their children. The incident has sparked widespread shock and outrage, with the National Commission for Women (NCW) demanding a swift investigation. Police say the crime unfolded two days after the family celebrated their son’s 15th birthday, with frequent disputes between the couple contributing to the tragedy.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The murder occurred in Rohini Sector 17, where Yogesh and Priya Sehgal lived with their two sons. On August 28, the family had gathered to celebrate their younger son’s 15th birthday. A quarrel erupted during the celebration over gifts exchanged between families, which escalated tensions. Kusum Sinha, the mother-in-law, stayed at her daughter’s home attempting to mediate the dispute.
However, on the morning of August 30, another argument broke out, leading Yogesh to allegedly attack Priya and Kusum with a pair of scissors. Both women suffered fatal stab wounds and died at the scene. The anguished brother of the victims, Megh Sinha, discovered the bodies after noticing bloodstains on the locked door and receiving no response from his sister and mother despite repeated calls.
Investigation and Arrest
After the murders, Yogesh fled the scene with his two sons but was tracked down and arrested by Rohini police while attempting to place the children in a shelter home. Police recovered the blood-stained scissors and clothes from the crime scene. DCP Rohini Rajiv Ranjan confirmed that frequent domestic disputes and escalating arguments were the apparent motive for this brutal crime.
Yogesh, who used to work as a jewellery artisan but was unemployed recently, is now in police custody facing murder charges. The victims’ family described Yogesh as often quarrelsome and expressed horror at the sudden lethal turn of events. Officials from the Crime Branch and Forensic Science Laboratory are investigating, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to build a complete picture of the incident.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has issued a notice to the Delhi Police demanding a comprehensive report and speedy justice for the victims.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This deeply disturbing incident poignantly underscores the dangers of unresolved domestic conflict escalating beyond control. The Logical Indian advocates for increased awareness, access to counselling and mediation services, and early intervention in family disputes as critical steps to prevent such irreversible tragedies.
It is heartbreaking that a domestic celebration turned into a bloody crime scene, leaving two women dead and children traumatised. In our societal pursuit of peace, kindness, and empathy, it is vital that communities, authorities, and civil society work hand-in-hand to address and resolve domestic discord before it erupts into violence.
