A 48-year-old cab driver, Lom Shankar, was arrested in Delhi for allegedly masturbating during a ride with a 22-year-old postgraduate woman student from Ambedkar University. The incident occurred on Monday while she was travelling from Model Town to Delhi University’s North Campus in Maurice Nagar.

The woman raised alarm, managed to escape near the campus, and filed a complaint with the police. Delhi Police seized the vehicle and said forensic examination is ongoing. Officials urge women passengers to remain vigilant and use safety apps. The accused remains in custody as investigations continue.

Incident Unfolded During Student’s Ride to College

The victim, originally from Bengaluru, had booked a Rapido cab to reach her classes after running late that morning. Police reports said the driver initially insisted she sit next to him in the front seat, which she politely declined. After she settled in the back, the driver allegedly made lewd remarks and tried to touch her. He then began masturbating while driving, glancing at her through the rearview mirror.

The student repeatedly protested and demanded he stop, but the driver ignored her pleas. The perilous ride ended when she managed to flee on reaching the North Campus area. She quickly sought help from police officers near Kranti Chowk and filed a formal complaint at Maurice Nagar police station.

Police Action and Official Responses

Delhi Police swiftly reacted to the complaint, registering an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to outraging a woman’s modesty and obscene acts in public. Lom Shankar, residing in Malka Ganj, was arrested based on the victim’s statement and digital evidence gathered from the ride-hailing app and CCTV footage.

Police officials confirmed that the cab was seized and forensic teams are examining it thoroughly for additional evidence. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents promptly and reassured the victim is receiving counselling and support.

Police further advised passengers to verify driver details at the start, share trip status with trusted contacts, and use emergency apps like Himmat to enhance personal safety.

Context of Rising Safety Concerns on Urban Transport

This incident adds to a worrying pattern of harassment and abuse faced by women using public and private transport in Delhi and neighbouring regions. Despite past measures, many safety gaps persist in driver vetting, monitoring of rides, and quick grievance redressal. Safety advocates argue that companies must incorporate greater technological checks, including body cameras, real-time tracking, and swifter exclusion of offenders from platforms.

Urban women often grapple with fear and vulnerability during solo or late-hour travel, impacting their freedom and mobility. Cases similar to this-crossing geographical and service boundaries-highlight systemic challenges requiring coordinated policy, corporate responsibility, and public awareness.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Every individual deserves a safe and respectful journey regardless of gender, time, or place. This troubling episode is a stark reminder that safety in public spaces is integral to our collective dignity and progress.

Beyond policing and laws, fostering a culture of empathy, kindness, and zero tolerance towards harassment is crucial. Service providers and authorities must collaborate transparently and proactively to rebuild trust. Empowering women to move freely without fear is a shared responsibility.
