The Delhi Government has announced free travel for candidates appearing in the NEET (UG) 2026 examination on June 21, allowing students to travel across all Delhi Transport Corporation (Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC)) buses free of cost on the exam day. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta confirmed the decision via social media platform X, stating that students will only need to show a valid admit card to avail the facility.
The initiative follows a wider wave of similar student-focused transport measures introduced in states like Punjab, Haryana and Bihar, amid growing calls for equitable access to examination centres and reduced logistical stress for NEET aspirants.
Delhi Announces Free DTC Travel
The Delhi Government has confirmed that all candidates appearing for the NEET (UG) 2026 examination on June 21 will be eligible for free travel on DTC buses across the national capital. According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s announcement, students will be required to show their admit cards while boarding to avail the facility.
The Chief Minister stated that the initiative is aimed at ensuring that “students do not face any difficulty in reaching their examination centres,” highlighting the government’s intent to reduce stress on one of India’s most competitive entrance exams. The decision applies across the entire public bus network operated by DTC, which serves lakhs of daily commuters in Delhi, including students travelling from distant residential areas to exam centres.
Officials have framed the step as part of a broader welfare-oriented approach to strengthen accessibility in public education-related infrastructure. The announcement was made through official communication channels and has since been widely circulated across media platforms.
A Growing Wave of State-Level Support
Delhi’s decision comes amid a wider national trend where multiple states have introduced similar transport support measures for NEET aspirants. Over the past week, Punjab, Haryana and Bihar have already announced free or subsidised bus travel for candidates appearing in the same examination cycle.
In Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had earlier announced free travel on Punjab Roadways buses for NEET candidates, following public interactions where students reportedly raised concerns about transportation costs. The scheme covers multiple days around the exam period and allows candidates to travel by simply showing their admit cards.
Haryana and Bihar followed with similar announcements, expanding the scope of exam-day mobility support. According to reports, these initiatives are part of a coordinated effort by states to reduce financial burden and ensure that no candidate misses their examination due to transport constraints. Delhi’s move now adds the national capital to this growing list, reinforcing what observers describe as an emerging policy trend of “exam-day welfare mobility” across India.
From Political Appeal To Policy Adoption
Interestingly, the push for free transport support gained political momentum after Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal publicly urged all Chief Ministers to consider free bus travel for NEET aspirants. In his appeal shared on social media, Kejriwal highlighted the financial and emotional pressure faced by students, particularly in light of the NEET re-examination cycle. He also pointed to Punjab’s decision as an example of student-centric governance and encouraged other states to adopt similar measures.
While Kejriwal’s appeal was not a formal policy directive, it contributed to a broader public debate around accessibility and fairness in competitive examinations. Subsequent announcements from multiple states, including Haryana and Bihar, have been viewed in media reporting as part of this expanding conversation. Delhi’s latest announcement under CM Rekha Gupta, however, has been independently framed by the government as a student welfare initiative rather than a response to political appeals, though it aligns with the same broader policy direction.
Why Transport Access Has Become A Key Exam-Day Issue
The NEET (UG) examination is one of India’s largest and most competitive entrance tests for medical education, with lakhs of students travelling across districts and cities to reach assigned examination centres.
In metropolitan regions like Delhi, students often depend heavily on public transport, particularly DTC buses and metro services, to reach centres that may be located far from their homes. Delays, overcrowding and unfamiliar routes can add to pre-exam anxiety, especially for first-generation learners or those from economically weaker backgrounds.
Education experts note that while academic preparation is central, logistical preparedness plays a crucial role in ensuring fairness. Over the years, states have experimented with free bus rides, special exam-day services and increased transport frequency during major competitive exams to reduce such barriers. Delhi’s latest step is consistent with this evolving understanding that access to examination centres is not merely a logistical concern but part of educational equity.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Initiatives like free exam-day transport reflect a compassionate approach to governance, recognising that small structural barriers can have large emotional and practical consequences for students. Ensuring smooth access to examination centres is a meaningful step towards reducing inequality in competitive education systems.
However, the growing patchwork of state-level policies also highlights the need for a more standardised national framework so that students receive consistent support regardless of geography. A coordinated approach could ensure fairness, reduce confusion and strengthen trust in public systems. As India continues to refine its examination ecosystem, should exam-day mobility support be made a permanent, nationwide policy for all major competitive exams to ensure equal opportunity for every student?
