A 22-year-old woman, the daughter of an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, was allegedly raped and murdered at her residence in Amar Colony on April 22, 2026. Police have arrested 19-year-old Rahul Meena, a former domestic worker, who allegedly used his familiarity with the house to gain entry and strangled her with a mobile charging cable while she was alone.

The crime came to light when her parents returned home and found her unconscious; she was later declared dead at a hospital. A case has been registered under sections related to murder, rape and robbery, with investigators probing a possible revenge motive and links to a similar offence in Rajasthan. The accused was tracked using CCTV and arrested from a hotel in Dwarka after allegedly fleeing with around ₹2–2.5 lakh.

Familiarity With Household Key to Crime

According to Delhi Police, the accused had previously worked in the victim’s home and exploited his knowledge of the residence, including access to a spare key, to carry out the attack. Officials said the crime appears to have been planned, with the accused entering the house when the victim was alone. Preliminary findings indicate that she was strangled using a charging cable and authorities are awaiting medical reports to confirm sexual assault.

A senior police officer stated that multiple teams were deployed across locations to trace the suspect, who attempted to evade detection by frequently changing his location. CCTV footage from nearby areas helped establish his movements and led to his arrest within a short span. Neighbours described the victim as a focused young woman preparing for competitive examinations, adding to the shock in the community.

Dismissal And Possible Revenge

Investigators revealed that Rahul Meena had been dismissed from his job around two months ago following allegations of theft, which may have contributed to a revenge-driven motive. Police are also examining whether the crime was part of a larger pattern, as the accused is suspected to have been involved in a similar sexual assault case in Rajasthan shortly before the Delhi incident.

Officials believe he travelled between states and committed offences within a short timeframe before being apprehended. He allegedly stole cash worth around ₹2–2.5 lakh from the house after the crime. Forensic teams are continuing to analyse evidence from the scene, while interrogation of the accused is underway to establish the sequence of events and confirm additional charges.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This tragic case highlights serious concerns around safety within private homes, especially where familiarity and access can be misused. At the same time, it is important to approach the issue without stigmatising domestic workers as a whole, many of whom work under difficult and unregulated conditions.

The need of the hour is stronger verification systems, better working conditions and open communication to build trust between employers and employees. Justice for the victim must remain the priority, alongside support for her grieving family and a fair legal process. How can we strengthen safety in our homes while also ensuring dignity and fairness for those who work within them?
