A 19-year-old Delhi University student, originally from West Bengal, was allegedly raped during a birthday celebration at a friend’s flat in Sector 33, Gurgaon, on Saturday. The accused, identified as 29-year-old Divyam, had joined the gathering through a mutual acquaintance.
According to the police, the incident occurred late at night while the party-goers were consuming alcohol. The survivor filed a complaint the following day, leading to the suspect’s arrest and subsequent remand to judicial custody.
Breach of Trust at a Private Gathering
The incident unfolded at an apartment in Sector 33, where the victim had gone to celebrate a friend’s birthday. While the gathering was initially a private circle of friends, the accused a resident of Rohini, Delhi was allowed entry as an acquaintance of one of the attendees.
Police reports suggest that the accused took advantage of the victim’s state late into the night, allegedly molesting her before taking her to a separate area of the flat to commit the assault.
“The accused had come to the party at the invitation of a friend. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crime was committed during the party where alcohol was being consumed,” a senior police officer stated. The survivor managed to raise an alarm, prompting the accused to flee the scene before he was eventually tracked down by Gurgaon authorities.
Legal Action and the Call for Safety
Following the survivor’s report, the Sadar Police Station registered a case under Section 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A medical examination was promptly conducted, and the victim’s statement was recorded before a judicial magistrate to ensure a robust legal process.
