In India, corneal blindness continues to affect lakhs of people – many of whom could regain vision if access to timely eye care and donor corneas were better organized. While medical science today can successfully treat many forms of corneal blindness, the larger challenge lies elsewhere: fragmented eye-banking systems, low awareness around eye donation and poor utilization of available donor tissue. In 2023–24, India retrieved nearly 49,000 corneas, but only around 27,000 were ultimately used for transplantation.

A Holistic Ecosystem for End-to-End Eye Care
Maharashtra-based Deesha Education Foundation is working to change this by building a technology-enabled ecosystem that improves how corneal blindness is identified, managed and treated.
Founded by Swapnil Gawande, the organization works across the full continuum of corneal care – from awareness and screening to retrieval, allocation and transplant coordination. Through Deesha International Eye Banks, Eye Retrieval Centres (ERCs), Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programmes (HCRP) and Mobile Eye Care Units, Deesha is helping improve access to eye care in underserved districts across Vidarbha.

Tech-Driven Innovation in Tissue Allocation
What makes Deesha particularly distinctive is its systems-level approach. The organization is currently building what it describes as India’s first integrated digital eye-banking and allocation platform – a technology-driven system designed to improve transparency, reduce tissue wastage and support real-time donor tissue allocation. The platform also aims to integrate AI-enabled predictive insights to help surgeons improve transplant outcomes.
To ensure no retrieved tissue goes to waste, Deesha’s digital system connects regional eye banks with hospital networks in real time. By digitizing matching protocols, the platform drastically cuts transit delays and allocation errors. This streamlined logistics framework ensures that viable donor corneas reach surgeons and waiting patients within the critical time window required for achieving maximum long-term transplant success.

Scale of Impact Across Underserved Communities
Its impact is already significant. Since inception, Deesha has facilitated over 12,700 corneal transplants and screened more than 3 lakh individuals through school and community eye care programs. It has also helped strengthen eye-banking infrastructure across multiple districts while sensitizing over 6 lakh people on eye and organ donation.

A Story of Restored Vision
One such intervention transformed the life of a school-going girl identified during a routine eye screening camp in Amravati. Diagnosed with advanced keratoconus and severe corneal scarring, her deteriorating vision had begun affecting her education and daily life. Through Deesha’s referral and eye-banking network, she received a timely corneal transplant, enabling her to return to school with restored vision and confidence.

The Vision Ahead
Today, Deesha is preparing for its next ambitious milestone – establishing a ₹30 crore Super Specialty Eye Hospital and Research Institute in Amravati focused on advanced corneal care, research and training. Its work highlights a powerful possibility: that restoring sight is not just a medical intervention – but a pathway back to education, livelihoods and dignity.

Corneal blindness in India highlights a poignant contrast in our healthcare system: the medical solutions exist, yet thousands remain without vision due to logistical gaps, fragmented networks, and tissue wastage. When thousands of retrieved corneas go unused each year, it represents not a failure of medicine, but a failure of supply chain coordination and awareness.
