Cyclone Shakti: Maharashtra on High Alert as Severe Storm Intensifies Over Arabian Sea – All You Need to Know

IMD warns Maharashtra of Cyclone Shakti’s rough seas, high winds and flooding risk between October 3–7.

Cyclone Shakti has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea, packing wind speeds of up to 100 kmph with gusts reaching 110 kmph. As of Saturday morning, the storm was centred approximately 420 km west-southwest of Dwarka, Gujarat, and is moving west-southwestwards at a speed of 13–18 kmph.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Shakti is the first post-monsoon cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea for 2025.

The system is expected to reach the northwest and adjoining west-central Arabian Sea by October 5 before re-curving east-northeastwards from October 6 and gradually weakening. While no direct landfall is expected on the Indian coast, the cyclone continues to influence weather patterns across western India.

Impact on Maharashtra and Coastal Warnings

The IMD has issued high to moderate cyclone warnings for six coastal districts of Maharashtra, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg valid from October 3 to 7. Between October 3 and 5, wind speeds of 45–55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, are expected along the North Maharashtra coast.

Sea conditions are currently rough to very rough, and are likely to remain so until October 5, prompting authorities to advise fishermen not to venture into the sea. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in interior regions, particularly in East Vidarbha and parts of Marathwada, with a risk of flooding in low-lying areas of North Konkan due to intense cloud cover and moisture influx.

Government Preparedness and Public Advisory

In response to the cyclone alert, the Maharashtra government has activated disaster management units across vulnerable districts. District administrations have been directed to prepare evacuation plans for coastal and flood-prone zones and to ensure rescue teams are on standby.

Public advisories have been issued urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, secure loose outdoor objects, and stay updated through official channels. The IMD has also warned of potential disruptions to maritime activities and power supply due to strong winds.

Officials are closely monitoring the storm’s trajectory, with regular updates being shared through the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state emergency operations centres.

Safety Tips and Precautionary Measures

Residents in affected areas are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Stay Indoors: Avoid going out during heavy rains and high winds.
  • Secure Property: Anchor loose items like furniture, signboards, and satellite dishes to prevent damage.
  • Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not walk or drive through waterlogged streets, as they may conceal open manholes or live electrical wires.
  • Emergency Kit: Keep essentials like torches, batteries, first-aid supplies, and non-perishable food ready.
  • Stay Informed: Follow updates from IMD, local authorities, and trusted news sources.
  • Fishermen: Do not venture into the sea until official clearance is given, as sea conditions remain extremely dangerous.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Cyclone Shakti serves as a timely reminder of the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, underscoring the need for robust disaster preparedness and climate resilience.

While the storm may not make landfall, its impact on coastal communities and infrastructure must not be underestimated. We stand for proactive governance, community solidarity, and scientific vigilance in the face of natural challenges.
