Pavan Kumar, a pani puri vendor in Bengaluru, was arrested for using rotten potatoes and onions, as well as unsafe borewell water, to prepare his food. The incident, reported by local residents, has raised significant concerns about food safety standards among street vendors. Kumar was charged under the Indian Penal Code and released on bail with a warning. This case highlights the importance of adhering to food safety regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the need for consumer vigilance.

Food Safety Violations Exposed

On September 29, Keshav, an autorickshaw driver, discovered Kumar collecting water from a borewell tank. Initially claiming it was for washing plates, Kumar was later seen using this contaminated water to prepare the spiced water for his pani puri. Upon inspection, Keshav and his friend found approximately 40 rotten potatoes and decayed onions in Kumar’s cart. “I was shocked to know that the person staying in our area was selling unhygienic pani puri for the last three years,” Keshav stated, urging greater community awareness about food hygiene.

Expert Advice on Street Food Safety

In light of this incident, experts and guidelines from the FSSAI emphasize the importance of strict adherence to food safety standards. The FSSAI mandates that street food vendors must use clean ingredients and safe water sources while maintaining proper hygiene practices. Key recommendations include using covered containers to protect food from contamination, ensuring utensils are clean and sanitized, and displaying FSSAI registration prominently at their stalls. The FSSAI also runs initiatives like Project Clean Street Food to train vendors on safe food handling practices and improve overall hygiene standards in street food operations.
