The latest reduction in commercial LPG prices offers relief to businesses, while domestic cooking gas prices remain unchanged.

Commercial LPG cylinder prices have been reduced by more than ₹200 across major Indian cities with effect from August 1, bringing relief to restaurants, hotels, caterers and other businesses that rely on 19-kg cylinders. The price of a commercial LPG cylinder has been cut by ₹202 in Delhi and ₹209 in Kolkata, while similar reductions have been announced in other metros as part of the monthly price revision by state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs).

The reduction applies only to commercial cylinders, with the price of the 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder remaining unchanged. This is the second consecutive monthly reduction after a series of sharp hikes earlier this year, partially reversing the impact of rising global energy prices linked to the West Asia crisis. Businesses have welcomed the move as it is expected to ease operating costs, while the government continues to maintain separate pricing mechanisms for commercial and domestic LPG.

Second Consecutive Price Cut

According to the revised rates effective immediately, a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder is now cheaper by ₹202 in Delhi and ₹209 in Kolkata, with comparable reductions announced in Mumbai, Chennai and other cities. The monthly revision has been carried out by state-run oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), which revise commercial LPG prices based on international benchmark rates, freight charges and foreign exchange movements.

The reduction is expected to provide financial relief to sectors that consume commercial LPG in large quantities, particularly restaurants, roadside eateries, hotels, bakeries, caterers and small food businesses. Industry representatives have long argued that frequent increases in fuel prices significantly raise operating expenses, forcing many businesses to either absorb higher costs or pass them on to customers.

While no special announcement accompanied the latest revision beyond the routine monthly price update, officials have reiterated that commercial LPG prices are market-linked and are revised periodically in line with global energy trends. Domestic LPG, however, follows a separate pricing framework and has not witnessed any change in this revision, meaning households using 14.2-kg cylinders will continue to pay existing rates.

Global Energy Trends Continue

The latest reduction comes after several months of volatility in commercial LPG prices. Between March and June this year, businesses saw repeated price increases as international energy markets reacted to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, supply disruptions and fluctuations in crude oil prices. Those hikes placed additional financial pressure on the hospitality and food service sectors, particularly small establishments already grappling with rising costs of ingredients, transportation and labour.

The trend began to reverse in July, when OMCs reduced the price of commercial LPG cylinders by up to ₹183.50 across different cities. The latest cut for August marks the second straight monthly reduction, suggesting that easing international prices have started to reflect in domestic commercial fuel rates. However, despite these back-to-back reductions, the cumulative relief has only partially offset the steep increases witnessed earlier this year.

Energy experts note that commercial LPG prices are closely linked to global market movements and therefore remain susceptible to geopolitical developments, currency fluctuations and changes in international demand. Domestic LPG prices, meanwhile, are influenced by broader government policy considerations, including affordability for households, making their pricing pattern distinct from commercial cylinders.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The latest reduction in commercial LPG prices is welcome news for thousands of businesses that depend on affordable cooking fuel to sustain their operations. Lower fuel costs can help restaurants, hotels and small eateries manage rising expenses, potentially reducing pressure on food prices and supporting employment in the hospitality sector. At the same time, the unchanged price of domestic LPG provides stability for households, though many families continue to hope for greater affordability in essential cooking fuel.

As global energy markets remain uncertain, transparent pricing mechanisms and predictable revisions are essential for both businesses and consumers. Ensuring that economic relief reaches those who need it most can strengthen livelihoods while supporting sustainable growth across sectors. Do you think reductions in commercial LPG prices should eventually translate into lower food prices for consumers, or are businesses justified in using the savings to recover earlier losses?
