In a heartening display of honesty, Padma, a 48-year-old sanitation worker in Chennai, returned 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth Rs 45 lakh found on a roadside.
While sweeping Muppathamman Koil Street in T Nagar, she discovered a bag containing the valuables and immediately informed her husband and supervisors.
The jewellery belonged to Ramesh, a businessman who had accidentally left it behind. On January 12, 2026, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially felicitated Padma for her integrity, rewarding her with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a certificate of appreciation.
Discovery of Immense Value
The incident unfolded during Padma’s early morning shift when she noticed a discarded plastic bag near a pushcart. Upon inspecting it, she was stunned to find heavy gold ornaments.
Despite her modest financial background, her first instinct was to ensure the property reached its rightful owner.
