Chaos at Gargi College Elections: Candidate Alleges Intimidation as ABVP, Left clash Over Fairness Claims

Delhi University Gargi College election turns contentious amid intimidation and procedural allegations.

Chaos broke out during student council elections at Delhi University’s Gargi College in New Delhi on Friday after a presidential candidate alleged intimidation, misconduct, and irregularities in the polling process. Videos circulating on social media show the candidate claiming she was “treated disrespectfully” and physically pushed out of the campus by teachers after they became aware of her political views.

The candidate also alleged she was made to wait for hours and pressured into signing documents certifying the election’s fairness even though, according to her, the ballot boxes had not been inspected before polling began. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) backed the candidate’s claims and demanded that the election be cancelled and conducted again, accusing the administration of attempting to influence the process.

However, Left-leaning student groups, including the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), rejected these allegations and instead accused ABVP members of entering the campus and intimidating students and faculty during the polls. The college administration had been approached for comment, though an official response had not been issued at the time of reporting.

Candidate Alleges Voting Pressure

The controversy began when a presidential candidate for the Gargi College student council posted a video on social media detailing her experience during the election process. In the video, she alleged that teachers and election authorities treated her disrespectfully after learning about her political leanings. According to her account, she was prevented from fully participating in the polling process and was physically pushed outside the college premises.

She further claimed that election officials made her wait for several hours and pressured her into signing documents stating that the election was being conducted in a fair and transparent manner. “The ballot boxes were not inspected prior to the election, and the voting process was initiated without obtaining my signature,” she alleged in the video, questioning the integrity of the election process.

Supporting her allegations, ABVP leaders accused the college administration of attempting to sideline the candidate and influencing the outcome of the polls. According to ABVP’s Delhi state secretary, Sarthak Sharma, the candidate was denied entry into the hall where voting and counting were taking place and faced “rude and disrespectful behaviour”. Sharma demanded that the elections be annulled and conducted again under transparent conditions.

He also claimed that the candidate had sought help from Aryan Mann, the president of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). Sharma maintained that the candidate was a general student and not formally affiliated with ABVP, though the organisation supported her demand for a fair election process.

Rival Student Groups Trade Allegations

Left-affiliated student organisations strongly disputed the claims made by ABVP and the candidate. In a statement, SFI alleged that individuals associated with ABVP forcibly entered the Gargi College campus and engaged in intimidation and harassment during the election proceedings.

The organisation described the incident as an attempt to disrupt the election process and exert political pressure on the student body. SFI leaders also alleged that ABVP members heckled professors and students inside the campus and raised slogans that escalated tensions during the election day.

The group condemned what it called “hooliganism” and demanded accountability from authorities to ensure that the campus remains safe and free from political intimidation. The incident reportedly created a tense environment on campus, particularly because Gargi College is a women’s college where safety concerns are taken very seriously by students and administrators alike.

Questions were also raised about the presence and role of the police during the situation and whether sufficient measures had been taken to prevent the escalation of tensions. Student politics has long been an influential part of university life in Delhi, with different ideological groups competing to mobilise support among young voters.

In recent years, clashes between rival student groups across university campuses have occasionally led to allegations of violence, intimidation, and political interference, reflecting broader ideological divisions within student communities.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Student elections are meant to cultivate leadership, democratic values, and respectful debate among young citizens. Universities are spaces where ideas should be exchanged freely and disagreements resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation. When allegations of intimidation, irregularities, or political interference emerge, they risk undermining trust in democratic processes and overshadowing the real purpose of student representation.

For educational institutions, maintaining transparency and neutrality during elections is crucial. Every student regardless of political beliefs must feel safe and respected while participating in campus governance. At the same time, student organisations and political groups must recognise that the health of campus democracy depends on civility, accountability, and mutual respect.
