There is some good news in store for those who are going to represent India in Rio Paralympics, 2016 which will be hosted by Brazil from 7th to 18th September. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced a cash prize for the winners in different categories. The Ministry thinks that this will place on an equal footing with the Indian medallists at Rio Olympics, 2016.
India is sending a team of 19 athletes who will represent the country in 10 events. These include para-triathlon, wheelchair-bound events like basketball, rugby, tennis, fencing, and other related sports. The Ministry announced that the gold medallists at the Paralympics will receive a cash prize of Rs 75 lakh; the silver medallists will be awarded Rs 50 lakh and the bronze medallist Rs 30 lakh.

Among those who are representing India, Devendra Jhajaria who is a javelin thrower and gave India her first Paralympic gold in Athens 2004, is going to take part this year as well. Amit Saroha, who is a champion in Club Thrower is expected to win a medal for the country. Other people representing India are Mariyappan Thangavelu, Varun Singh Bhati and Rampal Chahar who have shown high hopes in the High Jump event. Naresh Kumar Sharma will represent India in Shooting, Suyash Narayan Yadav in Swimming, Basha Farman in Powerlifting, Deepa Malik in Shot Put are other players in the squad.

This is a nice move made by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports which will encourage more people to come forward and show their sporting spirit. Now, let’s cheer up for our Paralympians, just as we did for our P.V Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, and Deepa Karmakar.
