Captain Shiva Chauhan made history on January 2, 2023, when she became the first woman Indian Army officer to be operationally deployed at Kumar Post on the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield. An officer of the Fire and Fury Sappers, she achieved the milestone after completing demanding training at the Siachen Battle School. Commissioned into the Indian Army’s Engineer Regiment in May 2021, she led a team of Sappers assigned combat engineering responsibilities at the post.
Hailing from Udaipur, Rajasthan, her journey from overcoming personal difficulties to taking on a challenging military assignment has become an important example of women’s growing participation in the armed forces. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her achievement, saying it would make every Indian proud and reflected the spirit of India’s Nari Shakti.
A Determined Journey
Captain Shiva Chauhan grew up in Udaipur, Rajasthan, with her parents and elder sister, Shubham. Her father passed away when she was young, leaving her mother, Anjali, responsible for raising her daughters and supporting their education. Despite the family’s difficulties, her mother remained committed to providing both daughters with a good education. Shiva also developed an early interest in joining the Indian Armed Forces and pursued her ambition alongside her academic interests.
She went on to study Civil Engineering at NJR Institute of Technology in Udaipur. Her educational background eventually aligned with her professional responsibilities in the Army’s Corps of Engineers, which undertakes engineering-related work in support of military operations.
Her elder sister, Shubham, who was an NCC cadet, also helped her prepare for the Services Selection Board process. In March 2020, Shiva was recommended for the Army’s Short Service Commission. She subsequently underwent officer training at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai and graduated as a Lieutenant the following year. In May 2021, she was commissioned into the Indian Army’s Engineer Regiment and became part of the Bengal Sappers, serving with the Fire and Fury Corps.

Breaking Barriers
Captain Chauhan’s historic deployment required extensive preparation for the demanding conditions of the Siachen Glacier. Before her induction, she underwent rigorous training at the Siachen Battle School alongside other Army personnel. The programme included endurance training, ice-wall climbing, avalanche and crevasse rescue, and survival drills. These exercises were intended to prepare soldiers for the difficult terrain, extreme cold and challenging conditions encountered at high altitudes.
According to the Indian Army, Captain Chauhan successfully completed the training despite the challenges. On January 2, 2023, she reached Kumar Post following an arduous climb, becoming the first woman officer to be operationally deployed at the location. The deployment marked a significant milestone in the Indian Army’s history and women’s participation in military operations.

As a member of the Fire and Fury Sappers, Captain Chauhan was entrusted with leading a team responsible for combat engineering tasks. The team’s deployment was initially planned for three months. Her achievement was officially acknowledged by the Prime Minister’s Office through a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau on January 4, 2023.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her, stating, “This will make every Indian proud, illustrating the spirit of India’s Nari Shakti.”
The Ministry of Defence subsequently included her achievement in its 2023 year-end review under the section on women’s participation in the armed forces. It identified her deployment at Kumar Post as an important milestone in breaking barriers for women officers. The review also noted the subsequent deployment of women medical officers at Siachen, reflecting the expanding opportunities for women in the region.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Captain Shiva Chauhan’s achievement represents more than an individual milestone. It highlights the importance of providing women with equal opportunities to demonstrate their abilities, take on demanding responsibilities and contribute to traditionally male-dominated professions. Her journey also draws attention to the role of families, particularly mothers and siblings, in encouraging young women to pursue their ambitions despite personal and financial challenges.
At The Logical Indian, we believe that professional opportunities should be determined by merit, commitment and capability rather than gender. While individual achievements deserve recognition, institutions must continue creating inclusive environments where women can grow, lead and contribute without discrimination.
How can we encourage more young women to pursue careers that challenge traditional gender expectations?
