Nine passengers were killed and several others injured after a private AC sleeper bus carrying around 35 people caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway near Dayanatpur village in Greater Noida’s Jewar area at around 11 pm on Wednesday, September 23.
The bus was travelling from Delhi towards Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh when the blaze erupted, with most passengers reportedly asleep at the time. As smoke rapidly filled the packed sleeper bus, several passengers broke or climbed through windows to escape.
Police said a preliminary investigation suggests a possible short circuit in the bus’s air-conditioning system may have triggered the fire, but the exact cause has not yet been established. The driver and conductor have been arrested and Jewar Police have registered a case under provisions relating to culpable homicide.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed and directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured and all possible assistance to affected families.
A Night Journey Turns Fatal
The bus, identified in reports as belonging to Raj Kalpana Travels, was carrying around 35 passengers when the fire broke out near Dayanatpur on the Yamuna Expressway. According to police-linked reports, the flames spread rapidly after the bus stopped on the side of the expressway, leaving passengers with little time to react.
Nine people, including one woman and eight men, were confirmed dead, according to Jewar Police as cited by media reports. Reports said the deceased included women, elderly passengers and a child with disabilities, although authorities were still working on identification and family notification. The injured were taken to a nearby Kailash Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters and police personnel rushed to the site following a distress call and worked to bring the blaze under control, with reports saying it took around 30 minutes. Traffic near the Jewar toll area and Falaida cut was also temporarily stopped as a precaution before being restored.
The accounts of survivors underline how quickly the situation turned chaotic. One passenger told ANI that he was asleep when another passenger woke him and said the bus had caught fire. “We all scrambled to get out,” he recalled, describing heavy smoke and difficulty escaping from the packed vehicle.
Another survivor said she woke up after someone banged on the door and found a large crowd already trying to flee. She said she left without her belongings or even her shoes, carrying only her phone. According to her account, smoke had become so dense that “nothing was visible”, while passengers were pushing and struggling to find a way out.
She said she was eventually pulled outside by another person and believed several passengers behind her may not have been able to escape. Video footage shared by ANI and PTI showed the bus engulfed in flames on the expressway, while reports said some passengers escaped by breaking or jumping through windows.
Cause Under Investigation
While initial reports described the incident as an AC “blast”, authorities have not established that an explosion occurred. A preliminary police assessment cited by The New Indian Express suggests that a short circuit in the bus’s air-conditioning system may have triggered the fire, but police have stressed that the exact cause remains under investigation.
The driver and conductor have been arrested, and investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the blaze, including how it began and why the flames spread so quickly through the sleeper coach.
The incident has also drawn attention to the challenges of evacuating passengers from sleeper buses during emergencies. Unlike conventional buses, sleeper coaches have enclosed berths and restricted movement areas, which can make evacuation particularly difficult once smoke begins filling the cabin.
In this case, several survivors reportedly had to rely on windows after the fire spread. However, questions about the vehicle’s maintenance, electrical systems, emergency exits, safety equipment and other possible contributing factors will need to be answered through the ongoing investigation rather than speculation.
Some reports have also referred to witnesses hearing sounds resembling firecrackers, but there is currently no confirmed official finding establishing that firecrackers or any other combustible material caused or intensified the blaze.
Official Response And Rescue
Following the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the tragedy and expressed condolences to the families of those who died.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, he directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and provide all possible assistance to the families affected. He also spoke to families of those who died and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Police and fire personnel remained involved in rescue and relief operations through the night. The blaze was eventually brought under control and traffic movement on the expressway was restored.
Meanwhile, the arrests of the driver and conductor mark the beginning of the legal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities will now have to establish whether the suspected electrical fault was the sole cause, whether safety measures were adequate and whether any other lapses contributed to the loss of life.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The Greater Noida bus fire is a painful reminder that road safety does not end with getting passengers from one destination to another. For people travelling overnight, especially in sleeper coaches, basic safeguards such as properly maintained electrical systems, accessible emergency exits, functional safety equipment and clear evacuation procedures can become the difference between survival and tragedy.
At the same time, the investigation must be allowed to establish responsibility through evidence rather than speculation. The nine people who lost their lives were passengers simply trying to reach their destination, and their families are now left dealing with an unimaginable loss.
