N Jency has made history as the first transgender woman in Tamil Nadu to complete a PhD and be appointed Assistant Professor in the English Department at Loyola College, Chennai.

Jency’s path to academia began in Tiruttani, a village in the Tiruvallur district, where she faced significant social and institutional challenges. She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Dr Ambedkar College of Arts and Science before earning her PhD in English literature at Loyola College.
Throughout her journey, she worked part-time as a tutor, emcee, and radio announcer, demonstrating remarkable determination and independence. Selected purely on merit from among several candidates, Jency is currently appointed on a contractual basis but remains hopeful for a permanent position.
