West Bengal is poised to witness a historic political transition as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to form its first-ever government in the state after defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the 2026 Assembly elections. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was formally chosen as the BJP legislature party leader on Friday and is expected to take oath as Chief Minister in Kolkata on May 9.
The dramatic shift in Bengal politics, however, has been overshadowed by reports of post-poll violence, multiple arrests, and the killing of Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath near Kolkata. While BJP leaders accused the TMC of fostering political violence, the TMC denied involvement and demanded an independent probe. Amid heightened tensions, Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata to oversee the government formation process, while outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continued to question the electoral outcome and hinted at legal intervention.
BJP’s Historic Bengal Breakthrough
The BJP’s victory marks the first time the party will govern West Bengal, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule and reshaping the political landscape of eastern India. Adhikari, who emerged as the face of the BJP’s Bengal campaign after defeating Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021 and later securing another high-profile electoral victory in Bhabanipur, has now become the party’s chief ministerial choice. According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several NDA chief ministers are expected to attend Saturday’s swearing-in ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.
Senior BJP leaders described the mandate as a vote for “development, security and administrative change” in the state. Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla stated that the new administration would prioritise women’s safety and governance reforms “from day one”, while Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said Bengal would finally receive a “stable and good government”. BJP leaders also defended Governor R. N. Ravi’s decision to dissolve the Assembly following the completion of the previous government’s term, calling it a constitutional process necessary for the transfer of power.
Post-Poll Violence Deepens Political Tensions
Even as preparations for the swearing-in ceremony intensified, political tensions escalated across the state following incidents of post-poll violence. The killing of Chandranath Rath, a close aide and personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, triggered sharp reactions from both the BJP and opposition parties. Rath was reportedly shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants near Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas on Wednesday night. Police have since detained several individuals for questioning, while investigators recovered motorcycles allegedly linked to the attack.
The BJP alleged that the murder reflected Bengal’s continuing culture of political violence and accused the TMC of enabling intimidation after the election results. However, Adhikari publicly appealed for calm and urged supporters not to retaliate. “Justice must prevail, but peace should be maintained,” he reportedly said while mourning Rath’s death.
The TMC rejected BJP allegations and instead demanded a court-monitored CBI investigation into the killing. Party leaders condemned the violence and claimed that several TMC workers had also been attacked in the aftermath of the election results. Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, alleged that the elections were conducted under pressure and called on the Election Commission to release CCTV footage from polling stations to ensure transparency.
According to reports, more than 200 criminal cases have been registered in connection with post-election unrest, with over 400 arrests made across the state. The Election Commission has reportedly directed authorities to adopt “zero tolerance” towards violence and ensure strict law enforcement during the transition period.

West Bengal’s election result may represent a major democratic shift, but democracy cannot flourish where fear, retaliation, and violence dominate public life. Political transitions, especially historic ones, demand maturity from leaders across party lines and restraint from supporters on the ground. The focus must now move beyond celebration and blame toward restoring trust, ensuring accountability and protecting ordinary citizens from becoming victims of political conflict.
Regardless of ideology, every political party has a responsibility to uphold democratic values, reject inflammatory rhetoric and prioritise peace over polarisation. Bengal’s rich cultural and political legacy deserves governance rooted in dialogue, coexistence and constitutional integrity, not cycles of revenge and hostility. As a new government prepares to take charge, can Bengal’s leaders rise above political rivalry and work together to ensure peace, dignity and democratic stability for every citizen?
