Around 50 BJP functionaries, including 21 MLAs, were detained in Ranchi on Monday, August 10, while protesting outside Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s official residence over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand’s recruitment examinations.
The protest, led by BJP state president Aditya Prakash Sahu and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi, came as thousands of JPSC and JSSC aspirants marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly after nearly three weeks of agitation.
The BJP demanded Soren’s resignation, a CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities and cancellation of the JSSC-CGL 2024 examination. The protesters, meanwhile, have maintained that the government has failed to address their core concerns.
The government says it has accepted most of their demands, cancelled certain JPSC examinations and proposed further reforms, but students dispute its claim that 98% of their demands have been met. The latest escalation follows the resignation of all three remaining JPSC members, whose resignations were accepted by Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on August 9.
BJP Protest Raises Political Heat
The BJP’s demonstration marked a significant escalation in the recruitment-exam controversy, with party leaders taking their protest directly to the Chief Minister’s residence. Babulal Marandi, Aditya Prakash Sahu, Hatia MLA Naveen Jaiswal and Ranchi MLA C P Singh were among those participating.
The party accused the Hemant Soren government of failing to protect the interests of job aspirants and demanded an independent investigation, arguing that a CBI probe would be necessary to establish accountability and restore confidence in the recruitment process.
The BJP’s protest coincided with a larger mobilisation by students, who gathered at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium before marching towards the Assembly. The administration had imposed restrictions around the Assembly and strengthened security with barricades and additional personnel.
The government, however, has maintained that it has been engaging with the students and addressing their concerns through cancellations, investigations and proposed reforms. The dispute has now become a three-way confrontation involving protesting aspirants, the state government and an opposition BJP seeking political accountability.
How The Exam Row Escalated
The immediate flashpoint is the controversy surrounding the 14th JPSC Combined Civil Services Examination, after candidates raised allegations of irregularities in the preliminary examination. The matter prompted a CID investigation, searches at the JPSC office and other locations, and arrests of people allegedly connected with the case.
Earlier reporting said 19 people had been arrested in connection with the investigation. The controversy intensified further when former JPSC chairman L Khiangte resigned, followed on August 9 by the resignation of the commission’s remaining members Ajita Bhattacharya, Anima Hansda and Jamal Ahmed. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar accepted their resignations following a recommendation from the state government.
At the same time, students have kept the older JSSC-CGL 2024 controversy at the centre of their agitation. Allegations concerning that examination have been contested through legal and investigative processes, and the issue has already reached the Jharkhand High Court.
The current protesters are demanding cancellation of the examination and a CBI probe, but the state government has argued that cancellation cannot be ordered arbitrarily, particularly because the examination process has already progressed and selected candidates have joined government service.
Minister Sudivya Kumar has maintained that any such decision would have to comply with the law. The government has also said that several demands have already been addressed, while students have rejected its claim that 98% of their demands have been accepted, arguing that only three of the 13 examinations they sought to have cancelled have actually been scrapped.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At the heart of this confrontation are thousands of young people who have invested years of preparation, money and hope in securing government jobs. Whether every allegation made by protesters is ultimately established is a matter for a fair and competent investigation, but the concerns of aspirants deserve to be heard seriously and without political intimidation. At the same time, protests must remain peaceful, and political parties should ensure that students’ grievances do not become merely another instrument for partisan confrontation.
The government has a responsibility to communicate clearly what has been investigated, what action has been taken and what remains unresolved, while protesters deserve a transparent process in which legitimate questions are answered with evidence rather than competing political claims. Independent institutions must also be allowed to function without pressure, so that those responsible for any proven wrongdoing are held accountable while innocent candidates are protected from arbitrary consequences.
