Pitabash Panda, a senior BJP leader, advocate, and RTI activist, was fatally shot near his home in Berhampur’s Brahma Nagar area on Monday night.
The murder was carried out by two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle, prompting a swift investigation and strong reactions from Odisha’s political circles. Police have launched a manhunt, and ministers and BJP leaders visited the hospital to show solidarity with Panda’s family and demand justice.
Shocking Attack and Community Response
Panda, aged 50 and well-known in both legal and political communities, was attacked as he stood by the roadside not far from his residence. Witnesses say two bike-borne assailants fired at him from close range before escaping into the night.
He was immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena was among several BJP leaders present at the hospital, highlighting the widespread grief and urgency surrounding the investigation.
Police Investigation Underway
Local law enforcement has started a manhunt for the killers, combing through potential leads and reviewing evidence from the crime scene. While the exact reason behind Panda’s murder is yet to be determined, police stated all angles, including personal, professional, and political, are under active scrutiny.
Panda’s role as an RTI activist and bar council member raises important questions about possible motives and the risks faced by those advocating for transparency and public accountability.
