Bogus Candidates Including Sunny Leones Name Appear On Junior Engineer Merit List; Dept To Take Action

On February 15, The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Bihar released a system-generated draft merit list of candidates for vacancies of junior engineer (JE) post on its official website phed.bih.nic.in. The uncanny part about the result was that a girl named Sunny Leone topped the list. According to the official release, the person whose name is Sunny Leone is a 27-year-old single woman with five years of working experience. The list exhibits that her father’s name is Leona Leone and she belongs to the unreserved category. The report further tells that the person has secured full marks of 25 points on the basis of experience and obtained 73.50 points based on her academic record, making her top the merit list with a whopping 98.50 score.

The merit list

The Joint Secretary, PHED, Ashok Kumar while speaking about the incident said that this mischief is done by someone. He also said that the list gets uploaded on the basis of the data filled by the candidates indicating that there was no extra information added by the department. He said that the system has selected the candidates with better scores and work experience based on the data provided. Around 17,911 aspirants from the state had registered for the junior engineer posts and each of their marks was put on the website. The department is to recruit 214 candidates.

Kumar further said that the shortlisted candidates will have to produce their documents to the department to justify the information exhibited on the list and it is anticipated that the department will catch hold of such miscreants during this process. He also said that stern action will be taken against those bogus candidates, reported the Times Of India. Vinod Narayan Jha, Cabinet Minister of PHED. Department, said that these are not appointments and counselling will be done where everyone will bring marksheets. He also hinted that some people might have provided false names and he assured that the matter will be resolved when they bring their marksheets.

The department has also provided a separate window for candidates to correct the information entered earlier. This window will be opened until February 24, 2019. This is likely to correct all the misinformation entered wrongfully by the candidates.

Why is it worrying?

The worrying factor is the fact that Sunny Leone was not the only name on the list but there was another candidate whose name was ‘bvcxzbnnb’. This person ranked third in the list. From this incident, it is substantial that a person can enter any name and still can get through the provisional list. And the matter of the fact is if Sunny Leone’s name hadn’t appeared on the list then this negligence on behalf of Bihar Public Health Engineering Department would have gone unnoticed.

Based on instances, this is not the first that something anomalous has happened in Bihar, when it comes to education. For instance, in 2016, several people raised their eyebrows against Ruby Rai and Saurabh Shresth for securing the top position from arts and science stream respectively. These two failed to answer basic answers related to their stream, which attracted severe criticism.
