In a shocking incident of animal cruelty, Syed Nasru, a 30-year-old migrant worker from Bihar, was arrested by the Cottonpet police for allegedly severing the udders of three cows in Bengaluru’s Vinayakanagar, Chamarajpet, during the early hours of Sunday, January 12, 2025. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and political condemnation.

Details of the Crime and Arrest

Cow owner Karna Naik, 45, discovered the horrific crime around 5:30 AM on January 12 when he went to milk his livestock. The three Jersey cross-breed cows, valued at approximately ₹2.5 lakh each, were found bleeding profusely, with their udders deliberately cut. Veterinary experts at Chamarajpet Animal Hospital confirmed that the animals required immediate surgical intervention and were in critical condition.

Deputy Commissioner of Police S Girish revealed that Nasru, who worked as a helper in a plastic and cloth bag stitching shop just 50 metres away from the incident site, was found intoxicated at the crime scene and immediately arrested. The Cottonpet police registered an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita (BNS), specifically targeting sections related to animal cruelty and grievous harm.

Political Reactions and Community Concerns

The incident has escalated tensions in the region, with political leaders demanding stringent action. BJP leaders, including MLC Ravi Kumar, called for a comprehensive investigation and demanded ₹5 lakh compensation for the cow owner. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda assured a thorough investigation, stating that Nasru would be prosecuted under the recently amended legal framework.

Following the incident, Leader of Opposition R Ashok visited the spot and expressed that they would observe a ‘black Sankranti’ if strict action was not taken against those responsible for this “jihadi” act. Local animal rights activists have also demanded a detailed psychiatric evaluation of Nasru, raising concerns about migrant worker integration and societal violence. This incident has sparked discussions about animal rights and the treatment of livestock in urban areas.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This heinous act exposes deep-rooted societal challenges surrounding animal welfare and communal harmony. How can we create a more empathetic society that respects all living beings and addresses the underlying social and economic vulnerabilities that lead to such violent acts?
