In yet another shocking incident, an 18-year-old girl in Nawada, Bihar was tied to a tree and thrashed by villagers for eloping with a boy from a different community. The ‘punishment’ had the approval of both the local panchayat and the girl’s father. The eloped girl was brought back to the village by her family and was then thrashed publicly in front of everyone.

According to The Hindu, the incident occurred on October 3 in Jogiya Maran village under Rajauli police station in Nawada district of Bihar.

Video of the incident filmed

The incident was filmed and the video went viral. It showed the girl in a semi-conscious state tied to a tree with a rope. Villagers, including elderly woman and children, were seen standing around the woman. In another clip, she was seen on the ground, still tied to the tree.

Reportedly, she remained tied to the tree for five hours before she became unconscious. Moreover, the punishment was meted out by the village panchayat. It passed the order that the girl, who belongs to a minority community to be tied to a tree and thrashed by the locals for falling in love with a man from another community. Her father, Mohd. Farid Ansari justified the punishment and said that he wants someone from their community for his daughter to get married with. While no arrests have been made, the police reportedly warned the accused perpetrators.

Girl eloped with a man from another community

The father told NDTV that the girl ran out of the home with some excuse when there was no power at night. Reportedly, the girl eloped with a boy named Rupesh Kumar on September 30. After this, the father even claimed that boy called him up and asked for the family to take her back. It was then that the villagers went and brought the woman back to their village.

The teenage girl had known the man for about one and half years and according to NDTV, she still wants to stay with him.

The Logical Indian take

In the present case, the act of tying up a girl to a tree and thrashing her in front of the entire villages falls nothing short of mental and physical harassment. It calls for our laws to become more stringent in order to prevent such instances from occurring again. Strict action is also required against the local panchayat, which wishfully became a party to the horrific incident. The incident has revealed the merciless treatment that the girl was subjected to despite eloping out of her free will.

The Logical Indian urges the authorities to investigate the matter and take stringent actions against those who are at fault for harassing the girl.
