The suspicious death of a young UKG student in a Bihar residential school has triggered violent protests and a police crackdown.

A five-year-old UKG student, Ashu Kumar, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a private residential school hostel in the Lodipur locality of Jehanabad, Bihar, on Monday, April 6, 2026. While the hostel management claimed the child sustained fatal injuries from an accidental fall, the victim’s family has alleged murder, pointing to a slit throat and multiple deep injury marks on his body.

Following massive public protests that saw the Gaya-Patna National Highway (NH-22) blocked, the Jehanabad police have taken the hostel-in-charge into custody and sealed the premises. A post-mortem has been conducted, and an investigation into allegations of severe abuse and institutional negligence is currently underway.

Brutality Masked as an Accident

Ashu Kumar, a resident of Bulaki Bigha village, had been enrolled at the residential school only ten days prior to the tragedy. According to his father, Dhananjay Kumar, the family received a call at 6:00 AM on Monday stating that the child’s health had suddenly deteriorated. However, upon reaching the hospital, the family was met with a gruesome reality. “My son did not die of a fall; his throat was slit and there were marks on his abdomen,” the father stated in his police complaint. Jehanabad SDPO Manish Chandra Chaudhary confirmed the conflicting narratives, stating, “Different aspects are emerging in the case.

The family members are suspecting murder of the child, while the hostel management claims that the child was injured after falling from the stairs.” The child was referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) but succumbed to his injuries en route.

Protests and Allegations of Evidence Tampering

The news of the child’s death sparked immediate fury among locals and relatives, who staged a sit-in on NH-22, demanding the immediate arrest of the school’s owner and staff. Adding to the gravity of the situation, a fact-finding team from the CPIML (Liberation) visited the school and alleged a cover-up.

The team reported that the hostel which housed over 100 children in a three-storey building was found locked, with the other students sent away and several staff members fleeing the site before the police arrived. SP Aprajit Lohan has assured the public that the investigation is being conducted with the utmost priority, noting that the body has been handed over to the family following the post-mortem. The victim’s elder brother, who also resided in the same hostel but on a different floor, is being questioned to piece together the events leading to the death.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The death of a five-year-old in a space meant for learning and growth is a heart-wrenching reminder of the vulnerabilities of our children. When a school an institution built on trust, becomes a site of alleged brutality and a subsequent “disappearance” of staff, it indicates a complete breakdown of accountability. We believe that no amount of compensation can replace a life lost to negligence or violence.

It is imperative that the Bihar government moves beyond mere arrests and implements a rigorous, mandatory oversight mechanism for private hostels. Every child deserves a sanctuary, not a death trap. We demand a swift, transparent trial to ensure that those responsible for this horrific act are brought to justice. How can we as a society ensure stricter oversight of private residential schools to prevent such tragedies from recurring?
