Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a financial assistance of ₹2 lakh each for the families of six residents from Bihar’s Kishanganj district who perished in a massive fire in Indore on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. The blaze, which killed eight people in total, was reportedly triggered by a short circuit at an electric vehicle (EV) charging point in the Brijeshwari Annex Colony.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the deaths and announced an additional ₹2 lakh ex-gratia from the PMNRF, as authorities in Madhya Pradesh launch a high-level probe into the safety of home EV charging infrastructure and electronic locking systems.

A State in Mourning: Bihar CM’s Directives

Expressing deep grief over the “extremely tragic” incident, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the Bihar Resident Commissioner in New Delhi to coordinate immediately with the Madhya Pradesh government. Beyond the financial aid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, the state is facilitating the respectful transportation of the mortal remains of the victims back to their native villages in Kishanganj.

The victims identified as Vijay Sethia (65), his wife Suman (60), daughter Tinu (35), and three other young family members had traveled to Indore just a day prior to support Vijay Sethia, who was scheduled for specialized jaw cancer surgery on Thursday.

Modern Amenities Turn into Deadly Traps

The fire broke out around 3:30 am while an electric car was charging outside the three-storey residence of polymer businessman Manoj Pugalia. Investigations suggest the blaze was exacerbated by the explosion of approximately ten LPG cylinders stored inside the house.

A critical failure occurred when the building’s electronic door locks jammed due to a power trip caused by the short circuit, leaving the occupants with no escape route. While four people were rescued by neighbors who heroically cut through metal fencing, eight others, including Pugalia and his pregnant daughter-in-law Simran, were unable to survive the intensifying smoke and flames.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that no technological advancement is worth the cost of a single human life. This tragedy exposes a chilling gap between our rapid adoption of “smart” technology like EVs and digital locksand the safety regulations required to govern them.

While we appreciate the prompt financial support from the Bihar and Union governments, money cannot replace the eight lives lost to a preventable short circuit and a locked door. We call for an immediate nationwide safety audit of residential EV charging setups and a mandate for manual overrides on all electronic home security systems. True progress must prioritize harmony between innovation and human safety, ensuring our homes remain sanctuaries, not hazards.
