In Bengaluru’s Viveknagar area, a man named Subramani allegedly set fire to his relatives’ house on July 1 over a long-standing unpaid loan of Rs 5 lakh. The house, belonging to Venkataramani and her sons Satish and Mohan Das, was attacked while Venkataramani and Mohan Das were inside.

Neighbours intervened promptly to extinguish the fire, preventing injuries, though the front portion of the house was damaged. The incident, caught on CCTV, shows Subramani pouring petrol and igniting the fire before fleeing.

An FIR has been registered against Subramani, his sister Parvati, and her daughter Mahalakshmi under serious charges including attempt to murder. All three are currently absconding, and police have launched a manhunt.

Loan Dispute Sparks Violent Arson Attempt

The conflict dates back nearly eight years when Venkataramani lent Rs 5 lakh to her relative Parvati for her daughter Mahalakshmi’s wedding. Despite repeated requests, the loan was never repaid. The issue resurfaced during a recent family wedding, leading to heated arguments and insults.

According to police, Subramani entered the compound around 5:20 PM on July 1 carrying petrol in a plastic bottle. CCTV footage shows him pouring the petrol on the main door, footwear stand, and bedroom window before lighting it on fire. Neighbours heard screams and rushed to help, managing to douse the flames before the fire spread further.

Incident Details and Legal Action

At the time of the attack, Venkataramani and Mohan Das were inside the house, while Satish was at work. The fire damaged the front portion and several windows, but no casualties were reported.

Satish filed a complaint at Viveknagar Police Station, leading to the registration of an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (Sections 109, 326(g), 351(2), 352), covering charges such as attempt to murder and voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means.

The accused, including Subramani, Parvati, and Mahalakshmi, remain absconding as police conduct a manhunt to apprehend them.
