Bengaluru Welcomes India’s First ‘Atmanirbhar’ Driverless Metro Train: A Leap in Urban Mobility

On January 6, 2025, Bengaluru Metro achieved a groundbreaking milestone by receiving India’s first indigenously manufactured driverless metro train from Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. This technological leap is set to significantly enhance urban transportation in the city.

Technological Marvel of Indigenous Engineering

The state-of-the-art trainset, manufactured entirely in India, is designed to operate on the Yellow Line, which connects RV Road to Bommasandra via Electronics City. This 18-km stretch will soon feature automated trains that enhance efficiency through advanced Driverless (GOA4) mode capabilities.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya remarked, “This is not just a train, but a symbol of India’s technological self-reliance. We are demonstrating to the world that India can develop world-class transportation solutions indigenously.”

Statements from Union Minister Manohar Lal

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, celebrated this achievement during a virtual event, stating, “As we inaugurate Bengaluru Metro’s new trainset and surpass 1,000 kilometers of operational metro rail, we celebrate a significant milestone in India’s urban mobility journey.” He added that Bengaluru is a global hub of IT and innovation that continues to address urban challenges through enhanced metro connectivity.

“With India now ranking third globally in metro rail, we aim to surpass the United States within five years,” he remarked. The Minister commended Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. for their exceptional work in local manufacturing and emphasized that this achievement contributes to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Operational Plans and Timelines

The first driverless trainset is expected to arrive in Bengaluru by January 20, 2025, and will undergo extensive testing before operations commence. BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwara Rao indicated that they plan to begin operations on the Yellow Line with just two trains initially—a prototype from China and the newly delivered train from Titagarh—by March or April 2025, with a headway of approximately 30 minutes between trains. The second train from Titagarh is anticipated by early February, followed by a third train by the end of April.

The automated train features a stainless steel body designed for state-of-the-art performance and will enhance sustainability while prioritizing passenger safety. Titagarh plans to ramp up production and deliver two additional trainsets per month starting September 2025.
