Thanks To A WhatsApp Group, Now People Use Carpools In Mussoorie To Reduce Traffic

Traffic is the most prominent problem India is currently fighting and nowadays not only metropolitan cities, small towns are also facing this problem.

It’s a common saying- “Where there is a will, there is a way”. To get rid of a long traffic jam, a 62-year-old lawyer did something out-of-the-box. Ashok Malhotra started a WhatsApp group for the people living in Mussoorie. His efforts are to get rid of traffic jam in Dehradun-Mussoorie highway. The WhatsApp group connects people to carpools. He said he got the inspiration to create the WhatsApp group from his son and daughter-in-law who take carpools to Supreme court in Delhi for their work.

Started on December 1, last year, the group has nearly 131-members. The process is straightforward, the member puts their travel plan in advance, and thus the other member can avail the facility. This out-of-the-box initiative mostly benefits hoteliers, doctors and students. While talking to News Post, Malhotra said, “Traffic has become a major problem in our city. To tackle the problem of pollution and traffic, we should come forward.”

As Mussoorie is a small town, people know each other. Pranav Sahni, who travel almost daily to Mussoorie and uses this facility says, “With this facility, environment and traffic are being benefited and as we all know each other, the journey is pleasant.”

The popularity of this group is also increasing among those who work in Delhi and elsewhere. Jatin Kapoor of Mussoorie who works in Delhi while on his way back home during Christmas holidays used this carpool facility through this group and said, “Along with the traffic problem, this is the best way to spend time with old friends.”

This is a unique initiative taken by Ashok Malhotra, and it deserves respect.
