These Transgenders Singing “Jana Gana Mana” Leaves Behind A Strong Question

Supported by

For the very first time, witness 7 Hijras taking pride and honour in being Indian and singing the National Anthem of India.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
– It is probably the most commonly asked question to a child.

The answer varies. Some want to become doctors. Some scientists; some soccer stars, musicians, painters, cops, teachers, engineers, and what not?

But not a single child wants to get their income by disrupting other’s work, performing at ceremonies, or offering blessings in exchange of money!

Unfortunately, these are the only employment opportunities available to Hijras!

Hijras have a recorded history in the Indian subcontinent from antiquity onwards. Still most Hijras live at the margins of society with very low status and the word ‘Hijra’ is often used in a derogatory manner. They face extreme discrimination for not falling into male or female gender categories and are deprived of their right to education and employment!

The idea behind this video is to show that just like Indian men and women, Indian Hijras too have the right to choose an employment which fits their talent, skill and passion.
