Bengaluru will now have a pink cab service with women drivers to cater to female passengers travelling to Kempegowda International Airport.

The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC), in collaboration with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), has come up with this joint venture to ensure the safety of women in the city, reported News18. This service can be availed by both solo women travellers and groups of women. The city’s international airport is located in Devanahalli, about 40 km from the city centre.

How does the cab service work?

Round the clock, a fleet of 10 cabs will operate around Bengaluru to take women passengers to the airport. While between 6 AM and 11:59 PM the fare will be Rs 21.50/km, during the night it will increase to Rs 23.50/km.

In an attempt to provide women drivers with a chance to become self-sustainable, they will be recruited from villages that surround the airport. The women drivers will also get training in self-defence tactics. They will be fluent in many languages and good at navigating the city, reported NDTV. Further, safety features like GPRS tracking and an SOS switch will be available in the cabs.

“This concept has been implemented with an objective to provide a safe and secure mode of transport for women travellers from the Airport, while simultaneously creating opportunities for women drivers to be self-employed and empowered,” said the Managing Director of KSTDC, Kumar Pushkar, emphasizing the two major objectives of the move.

The Logical Indian take

Not emphasizing the condition of Bengaluru, women in every city in India often feel unsafe while travelling alone in a cab, and for good reasons. Violence against women has become an ugly reality in the country, and it goes without saying that perpetrators most of the time include men.

There have been instances where women have been subject to sexual harassment, molestation and abduction by cab drivers. While not every cab driver in dangerous, such incidents have forced women to fear for their lives while boarding a cab. In a recent incident, a woman in West Bengal had to jump out of a running cab to escape abduction by the driver.

With so much happening around the country, KSTDC and BIAL have taken a positive step towards ensuring the safety of women in the city, mostly those who have to travel at night. The Logical Indian hopes other cities in the country follow their footsteps too.
